Aftermath

Days morphed into weeks. The school buzzed with rumors, but for me, it was all a blur of faces and whispers. I found solace in solitude, staring out the window in my room, lost in thoughts of what could have been. The media storm had erupted, and I was thrust into the spotlight.

My mother and I rarely spoke now, the tension heavy and thick. I could feel her guilt, her regret coiling around us like a fog. There were court dates, family meetings, and social workers who trailed behind me like shadows, each day further eroding my sense of calm.

I had missed school, sacrificed friendships, all for this. But I was constantly reminded that I was still a child—one forced to navigate a world of adult decisions. I missed the innocence of being fifteen, of not knowing what betrayal felt like.

And then one afternoon, as I sat cross-legged on my bed, a thought flickered, lighting a dark corner of my mind. I reached for my phone, scrolling through my messages. I could hear that persistent ping from a few days prior. Identified as an unknown number.

“Your baby is safe.” It read. My blood ran cold. Who sent this? I felt like a puppet on strings, and someone was yanking me back into their game. I turned to my mom, who sat on the edge of the bed, looking defeated. “Mom, I got a message. Someone is watching us.”

The Final Twist

“I think it’s time we tell the truth,” she said slowly. Those words felt heavy and wrong, like there was something I was missing. The air felt electric as I waited for her to continue. “About your real father.”

“What do you mean?” My heart skipped a beat. “What about him?”

And then it hit me. All those years of whispers in the family, clipped conversations around dinner tables, and furtive glances—there was a mystery deep-rooted in our family that I had overlooked.

“He isn’t who you think he is,” my mother said softly.

All those moments, those shadows cast my way were finally aligning. The truth was a knife—cutting, sharp, and unforgiving.

“We need to go to my mother’s old journals,” I whispered, already moving, urgent. I could feel the truth clawing at me, a feral cat trapped in a corner.

Once we reached the attic, old dust danced in the golden light filtering through the window. I kicked aside scattered boxes, searching for the familiar leather-bound journal. It would be here. It had to be.

Finally, I found it—a journal with my mother’s handwriting, crumbling with age yet holding memories of things unsaid. Flipping it open, I saw my mother’s neat script, her words spilling onto the page like secrets. And then I saw a name, scrawled in the margins.

It was his name. The father I never met. The man who lived a life without knowing about me. I stopped breathing, realization washing over me like a cold wave.

He was Mateo’s father, the one who had been missing from my life all along. My mind whirled, the final piece of the puzzle sliding into place. I was tied to this nightmare through more than just blood. It was a web of fate, of betrayals layered deeper than I could have ever imagined. The realization flipped everything around me on its head.

And then the door creaked behind me. A shadow loomed. I spun around, my heart racing. And there he was—
