Revelations

“Your son, Mateo,” Lucia said, her gaze shifting to him, “is not the only one. My sister was fifteen when she got pregnant. Her life was ruined because of this woman.”

A gasping silence followed. My heart raced. I had thought I was alone in this battle, the only one caught in the web of deceit. The idea that there was another victim felt surreal.

“She lost the baby…and then she lost herself. Not long after that, she was in a facility.” Lucia’s hands trembled, a quiet rage simmering beneath her calm exterior. “And I have the records. Everything. Your mother sent Patricia to ‘help’ us too. She’s a fixer.”

Each word was an unraveling. The small, quiet girl from my library was a storm of power and truth. I looked at my mother, who now wore a mask of disbelief and horror. She had no idea of Patricia’s true nature.

“You monster,” my mother whispered again.

“I had to protect our family!” Patricia shouted back, desperation clawing at her voice. “Do you know how hard it is to grow up poor? I did this for you!”

“By erasing a life?” I echoed. “This isn’t helping anyone! You were supposed to be my family!”

My father, who had been silent for what felt like an eternity, finally found his voice. “This is enough. Patricia, leave. You’re no sister to us.”

Patricia’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. The sting of betrayal was heavy in the air, each breath a reminder of the inconceivable reality. A tightening knot formed in my stomach.

Confrontation

The police arrived, and chaos erupted in the office. I felt a strange mix of relief and fear. Would this end my nightmare, or was it just the beginning? They handcuffed Mateo, dragging him through the doorway as he spit out desperate denials. “This isn’t fair! You can’t do this!”

I felt numb, each moment dragging my heart deeper into a pit of confusion and loss. In the chaos, I caught a glimpse of Aunt Patricia trying to slip out the back, eyes darting. “I’m going to fix this, you’ll see!”

“Fix what?” I called after her, the anger bubbling to the surface again. “Fix you!”

And just like that, she was gone, slipping through the doors like she was made of smoke—vanishing into the cold reality that now surrounded me.

Back in the office, the principal’s voice cut through the noise. “This is no longer a matter for the school. We are following legal procedures.”

The officers began asking me questions, trying to piece together the timeline, but my mind was a tangle of thoughts, memories tumbling over each other. I focused on the thermos, the evidence of the betrayal, and the life that was still inside me. I couldn't lose that too.

The story continues…
