In the Aftermath of the Ceremony
I stood there in shock, the divorce papers trembling in my hands. The world around me blurred, flashes from cameras and murmurs of congratulations merging into an indistinct hum. It felt surreal, as if I were in a nightmare where I couldn’t wake up.
“You need to come with me,” a familiar voice urged, cutting through the haze. It was Dorian, his expression urgent as he grabbed my arm, guiding me toward a quieter corner of the hall.
“What are you doing here?” I barely managed to whisper, still reeling from the weight of the envelope. My heart pounded, echoing Dorian’s determination.
“There’s something you don’t know about Corin,” he said, voice low and intense. “Something that could change everything.”
“What do you mean?” My breath caught in my throat, a mixture of fear and curiosity flooding my veins. “What could possibly change anything now?”
Dorian took a step closer, his eyes locked onto mine. “He’s been hiding a significant part of his past. It’s serious.”
A surge of anger bubbled within me. “What could justify handing me divorce papers right after graduation?”
The Truth About Corin
Dorian glanced around, as if the walls had ears. “Corin was involved in a scandal during med school—a scandal that could jeopardize his entire career.”
“What?” The word escaped my lips like a gasp. My mind raced, piecing together Corin’s odd behaviors over the past few months. Late nights, unexplained absences, and the way his smile never quite reached his eyes. “What kind of scandal?”
“He received illicit help during exams,” Dorian revealed, his tone grave. “Some classmates found out, and it created rifts among them. He’s been alienated, pushing people away.”
My heart sank deeper into my chest, each new detail unraveling my trust in Corin. “Why didn't he tell me?” I asked, voice trembling. “I sacrificed everything for him.”
“That’s exactly why,” Dorian replied. “He thought he would lose you.”
Just as my mind began to process the implications of his words, I caught a glimpse of Corin approaching. Panic surged through me, my stomach twisting. “He’s coming!”
Dorian’s face hardened, his warning unspoken. “You need to decide what to do.”
Corin halted a few feet away, his eyes darting between us, searching, conflicted. “I—” he started, but the words hung in the air, heavy and tense.
Then he declared, “I never wanted this life,” igniting a storm of emotions inside me. The weight of his admission crashed over me, leaving me breathless. What did he mean? Why now?
