Ingredients

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, finely chopped

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes

1 tablespoon tomato paste

1 teaspoon sugar (optional)

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

Salt and pepper, to taste

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Instructions

In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent, about 5 minutes.

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to let it burn.

Pour in the crushed tomatoes and add the tomato paste. Stir to combine.

If using, add the sugar, dried oregano, and dried basil. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Bring the sauce to a simmer and reduce the heat to low. Allow it to cook for 20-30 minutes to let the flavors meld together, stirring occasionally.

Taste and adjust seasonings if necessary. If you prefer a smoother sauce, you can blend it using a hand blender.

Serve hot over your favorite pasta and garnish with fresh basil leaves.
