Frantic Search for Caleb
The school called at noon. “Caleb hasn’t shown up today,” the secretary said, her voice tinged with concern. My heart dropped. “What do you mean he’s missing?”
I rushed to his school, thoughts racing. “Where could he be?” I imagined the worst. Had Richard taken him? Clenching my fists, I drove to Richard’s office, but he wasn’t there. Panic clawed at me.
“He must be at the cabin,” I muttered, remembering the place we used to visit for family outings. It was remote, isolated, perfect for hiding. I slammed my foot on the accelerator, the tires screeching as I sped towards the woods.
When I finally reached the cabin, my breath came in harsh gasps. I parked the car and crept up to the door, my pulse pounding in my ears. I could hear voices inside.
“We need to keep him quiet, Richard, or we’re both screwed!”
That voice belonged to a man I didn’t recognize. Richard’s response was a low growl. “He won’t say a word. He knows what happens to those who talk.”
Stomach churning, I pressed my ear against the splintered wood. “He’s just a kid!” the man argued, desperation in his tone. “He won’t understand how serious this is.”
“He’ll understand if he wants to stay safe,” Richard shot back. The implication made my blood run cold. I took a step back, overwhelmed by what I was hearing. Caleb was in there, and I couldn’t let him stay in that danger any longer.
The Unthinkable Truth
I burst through the door, adrenaline coursing through me. “Caleb! Get away from him!” But what I saw made me freeze.
Caleb stood next to Richard, a strange defiance in his eyes. “Mom, I can help him,” he said, as if I were the intruder.
“Help him?” I gasped, disbelief washing over me. “What do you mean you can help him?”
“I’ve been learning from Dad,” he said, his voice steady. “I know what to do with the USB drive.”
The ground fell away beneath me. “You’ve been learning? Caleb, you’re only ten! You shouldn’t even be involved in this!”
Richard smirked, a chilling confidence radiating from him. “I told you she wouldn’t understand. Caleb’s been with me every step of the way. He knows how to keep our secrets.”
I shook my head in disbelief. “You’ve manipulated him. He’s just a child!” But deep down, I could see it. The glint in Caleb’s eye, the way he stood beside his father with a twisted loyalty.
Just then, sirens echoed in the distance. “The police,” I whispered incredulously, realization dawning. They must have been tipped off. Richard's smirk faltered as the sound grew louder. “What have you done?”
“We’re fine,” Richard hissed, but I could see the cracks forming in his facade. The door burst open, and uniformed officers flooded the cabin.
“Hands up! Richard Hargrove, you’re under arrest.”
Stunned, I watched as Caleb’s expression shifted, a moment of fear flashing across his face. He had led them here, unknowingly implicating himself in his father’s schemes. I felt the betrayal like a punch to the gut. Everything I thought I knew was wrong.
