Revealing the Truth
Ethan pulled Lily close, her small hand warming his as they stepped away from the crowd. He glanced back at the gala, the laughter and chatter swirling like a storm around him. This wasn't where he wanted to be, not with all those judgmental eyes. He took a deep breath, the weight of his words heavy on his chest.
"Lily," he began, kneeling to meet her gaze. "There's something I need to tell you." Her big, innocent eyes looked up at him, brimming with trust.
"What is it, Daddy?" she whispered, sensing the gravity in his tone.
"Since your mom… since she passed away, things have been tough for us. I lost my job, and I've been trying to hold everything together for us." He paused, swallowing hard. "We don’t have as much money as we used to. That’s why I didn’t want to go to the hotel tonight."
Lily's brow furrowed, confusion flickering across her face. "But we had those fun times at the park and the zoo?"
"We did, and we'll keep having them," he reassured her, forcing a smile. "But it’s also because I didn’t say goodbye to my coworkers. I left without telling them why. I felt ashamed."
"Daddy, you did what you had to. Mom would be proud of you." She squared her little shoulders, her voice firm.
Her words struck him deeply, infusing him with a mix of pride and sorrow. But then he noticed the whispering guests, their eyes darting toward them, judgment evident in their expressions. Ethan's heart sank. He was exposing not just his vulnerabilities, but also Lily’s innocence.
“Let’s go back to the party,” Ethan suggested, squeezing her hand. He needed to be strong for her. The whispers faded as they walked back, but just as he turned, a familiar face emerged from the crowd.
Confrontation
There he was—Mark, Sarah’s old boss. The man who had once patted Ethan on the back with a smile now wore an expression that stirred something dark within. Ethan’s heart raced. He couldn’t let this man shatter the fragile peace he had constructed.
"Ethan!" Mark called, his voice booming over the commotion. "Long time no see." But the warmth in his tone felt forced.
“Mark,” Ethan replied, anxiety curling in his stomach. “Can we talk?”
They stepped aside, away from the glitzy decorations and clinking glasses. Ethan felt the sweat pooling on his brow. “Why didn’t you reach out after… after Sarah’s death?”
Mark’s eyes shifted, a flicker of something unreadable passing over his features. “There are things you didn’t know about her, Ethan.”
"What do you mean?" Ethan demanded, heart pounding.
“Sarah was involved in a situation… a scandal. Our finances had faced significant turmoil before her passing,” Mark said, his voice lowering. “It’s why things fell apart for you.”
The air sucked from Ethan’s lungs, his world tilting as he processed the revelation. Sarah had kept secrets. The roses he bought tonight felt like a cruel reminder of a love riddled with lies. He staggered back, clutching Lily's hand tighter, reeling from the betrayal.
“This can’t be true,” he murmured, struggling to breathe. “She wouldn’t…”
But as the truth settled in, Ethan realized that everything he thought was solid had turned to dust, leaving him to stand on the edge of an uncertain future.
