Unexpected Invitations
Ethan slid out of the diner, the bell above the door jingling softly as he stepped into the biting Chicago air. The streetlights flickered, casting long shadows on the pavement. He shifted Lily in his arms, her small frame warm against him.
Just as he turned to leave, a voice called out from behind. "Ethan? Is that you?"
He turned to see Mark Donnelly, a former colleague, approaching with a look of surprise. Mark's eyes lit up with recognition. "I can't believe it's you! It's been ages!"
Ethan forced a smile, the weight of nostalgia mixing with discomfort. "Yeah, a long time." He glanced back at the diner, considering the milkshake that might soon melt.
"What are you doing here?" Mark asked, then his gaze fell to Lily. "Oh, wow, she’s grown. I remember when you were always rushing off to pick her up from daycare.”
Before Ethan could respond, Mark continued, “Listen, I’m heading to the gala at the Grand Regent. We have a few extra spots. You should come as my plus-one.”
“A gala? Tonight?” Ethan hesitated, anxiety bubbling up in his chest. The thought of facing his former colleagues, the whispers of his departure buzzing in his ears, was overwhelming.
But then he thought of Lily. Maybe it would be a distraction for her, a beautiful event with food and music. “Alright,” he finally said, although his stomach churned at the idea of stepping back into that world.
As they walked towards the hotel, Ethan felt the frigid wind cutting through his jacket. Each step felt heavier, the memories of the past three years flooding his mind. Would they see him as the man who abandoned everything, or the father just trying to survive?
Shadows of the Past
The gala was in full swing, a swirl of laughter and clinking glasses filling the air. Ethan felt small in the expansive lobby, the chandeliers casting a golden glow over the crowd. He held Lily’s hand tightly, a lifeline amidst the chaos.
“Daddy, can I have some cake?” she whispered, her eyes wide with wonder.
“I promise, sweetie. Just a little while longer,” he replied, forcing a smile as he scanned the room.
Old colleagues greeted him, smiles faltering as they remembered the circumstances of his departure. “Ethan! Long time,” one man said, though his tone was laced with something sharp.
With every forced conversation, Ethan felt the past creeping closer. The event was honoring a project he had led, his fingerprints still visible but overshadowed by the stigma of leaving.
As he bent down to whisper to Lily, he caught sight of Patricia across the room, her expression unyielding. The memory of their earlier encounter at the front desk twisted his stomach.
Just as he was about to enjoy a moment with Lily, Patricia marched up to him, her voice sharp. “What are you doing here, Ethan? You were turned away earlier for a reason,” she said, eyes glinting with a mix of disdain and triumph.
His heart raced, and the laughter around him faded into a dull roar. He felt exposed, like everyone was watching the spectacle unfold. “I—” he stammered, but before he could defend himself, a familiar face approached.
It was Sarah’s former boss, a man Ethan hadn’t seen since the funeral. His smile was tight but forced. “Ethan, we need to talk. There’s something you should know.”
Heart pounding, Ethan nodded, anxiety surging as the man pulled him aside. “It’s about Sarah. There was a scandal, and…” His words trailed off, leaving a debilitating silence hanging in the air.
“A scandal?” Ethan echoed, dread pooling in his stomach. “What do you mean?”
The man hesitated before continuing, “Sarah was involved in something...something that implicates you too.”
