Twin Brother's Shocking Reaction to Newborn Daughter After Years of Struggle

Twin Brother's Shocking Reaction to Newborn Daughter After Years of Struggle
← Previous Part (2) Reading Part 3 of 3

“It’s not just a story, Melissa!” Ryan exploded, his carefully controlled composure finally cracking. “Don’t you understand? Grandmother Eleanor said if we don’t comply, the Hollow will take more. It will take everything we hold dear. It will start with Lily, and then…” He trailed off, unable to voice the unthinkable. I remembered overhearing snippets of conversations between Ryan and our father before he passed away. Talk of financial troubles, of a mysterious benefactor who had helped save the farm. Was that benefactor… the Hollow? A sudden, sickening realization struck me: Ryan had known about this all along. He hadn't been surprised by the birthmark; he'd been expecting it. He'd agreed to carry this burden, this pact, for years.

Then, I saw it. A small, almost imperceptible tremor in Lily’s hand. A fleeting shadow passing over her face. A whisper of wind, even though the hospital room was sealed tight. Something was happening. Something… responding. And I knew, with a certainty that chilled me to the bone, that time was running out.

The wind picked up outside, rattling the hospital windows. Lily stirred in Ryan’s arms, her eyes fluttering open. They weren’t the bright, innocent blue of a newborn. They were… ancient. Knowing. She gazed directly at Ryan, then at me, a faint, knowing smile playing on her lips.

Chapter 5: The Hollow's Claim

“It’s too late,” Ryan whispered, his voice filled with a profound sadness. “It’s already started.” He looked at Melissa, his eyes pleading for understanding. “I’ve already signed the papers. The deed to Hemlock Farms. It’s all going back.” Melissa, numb with shock, could only nod. I wanted to fight, to argue, to find another way, but I saw the resignation in Ryan’s eyes. He had made his peace.

Suddenly, the room grew cold, despite the hospital’s heating system. A strange, floral scent filled the air, overpowering the antiseptic smell. Lily’s birthmark began to glow, pulsating with an eerie, otherworldly light. The silver locket in Ryan’s hand vibrated, then sprang open, revealing a miniature portrait of Grandmother Eleanor. As I stared at the portrait, I noticed something I hadn’t seen before: a faint, identical wing-shaped birthmark on Grandmother Eleanor’s own neck, cleverly concealed by a high collar. She hadn’t been protecting us from the Hollow; she had been part of it.

The truth hit me like a physical blow. The Hollow didn’t demand a sacrifice; it demanded a continuation. A lineage. Grandmother Eleanor hadn’t been trying to break the pact; she’d been ensuring its survival. Ryan hadn’t been dreading the mark; he’d been preparing to fulfill his family’s obligation. Lily smiled again, a truly ancient, knowing smile. Ryan gently handed Lily to Melissa, his eyes filled with a heartbreaking mixture of love and acceptance. “She’s not ours to keep, Sarah. She never was.” As the room plunged into darkness, I understood. The Hollow didn’t take; it simply… reclaimed what was always its own. The price of prosperity wasn't a sacrifice; it was a legacy. A legacy we were all bound to fulfill.
