Twin Brother's Shocking Reaction to Newborn Daughter After Years of Struggle

Twin Brother's Shocking Reaction to Newborn Daughter After Years of Struggle
← Previous Part (1) Reading Part 2 of 3

“Returned?” Melissa’s voice was barely a whisper, her body trembling uncontrollably. “What does that even mean, ‘returned’?” Ryan avoided her gaze, focusing on the rhythmic rise and fall of Lily’s chest. "To Hemlock Hollow. To… them." He finally met my eyes, his voice laced with desperation. "Grandmother Eleanor said there's a ritual, a way to… give her back. A way to appease whatever it is out there.”

Chapter 3: The Weight of the Past

I remembered Grandmother Eleanor’s warnings about Hemlock Hollow, about staying away from the woods after dark. She’d always been vague, speaking in riddles and half-truths, but now, those fragmented memories coalesced into a terrifying picture. She hadn’t been superstitious; she’d been protecting us. "There has to be another way," I insisted, grasping for any semblance of hope. "We can get a second opinion, consult specialists… anything but this.”

Ryan shook his head. “It’s not a medical condition, Sarah. It’s… something else. Grandmother Eleanor warned us that doctors wouldn’t understand. They’d dismiss it as a coincidence. She said the Hollow doesn't respond to logic or reason.” He revealed a small, antique wooden box he’d been keeping hidden in his hospital bag. Inside, nestled on a bed of faded velvet, was a tarnished silver locket and a brittle, yellowed manuscript. “This is her journal. The detailed instructions for the ritual. She spent years researching this, preparing for this.”

Melissa, her face pale and drawn, snatched the manuscript, her eyes scanning the archaic script. “This is insane! This is… witchcraft!” Ryan reached for her hand, but she pulled away. “I can’t believe you, Ryan! You’ve been planning this? You were prepared to give our daughter away based on some crazy old legend?” The air crackled with tension, the weight of generations pressing down on us. I noticed a subtle detail in the journal: a faded photograph tucked between the pages. A photograph of Grandmother Eleanor, standing near the edge of Hemlock Hollow, looking… fearful.

Melissa continued to pore over the manuscript, her initial disbelief slowly giving way to a chilling realization. “The ritual… it requires… a sacrifice. Not a life, but something precious. Something of equal value to the child.” She looked up at Ryan, her eyes wide with horror. “What does that mean? What has to be given up?” Ryan didn’t answer immediately, his gaze fixed on Lily, sleeping peacefully in his arms.

Chapter 4: The Price of a Promise

“Our family’s prosperity,” Ryan finally said, his voice barely audible. “The Hollow demands a return of the good fortune it granted our ancestors. Our business… the land… everything my father built. It all goes back.” The family business, Hemlock Farms, was the heart of our town, providing jobs and sustaining livelihoods. Losing it would devastate the community. Melissa burst into tears, burying her face in her hands. “You can’t be serious! You’re willing to sacrifice everything for… for a story?”
