The Night My Daughter’s Perfect Prom Turned Into a Race Against Time to Reveal a Buried Secret

The Night My Daughter’s Perfect Prom Turned Into a Race Against Time to Reveal a Buried Secret Save

Section 3

“Please, Ryan,” I pleaded, my voice trembling slightly. “Just give me a little more time.”

He crossed his arms, his eyes narrowing. “Time for what? To come up with another excuse?”

“I can’t just throw everything out there like that. Not now.”

I gestured toward the kitchen where Iris was filling a glass. “She’s so happy. I don’t want to ruin this for her.”

Ryan’s expression softened for just a moment. “You don’t have much time left, and if you don’t tell her, I will.”

The weight of his words sank in like a stone, sending ripples of anxiety through my core. I glanced at Iris, her laughter echoing from the kitchen, oblivious to the storm gathering in the living room.

“What do I say?” I asked, desperation overtaking my calm facade.

“I can’t help you with that. Just know that telling the truth is the only way forward.”

As Iris returned, I took a deep breath, forcing a smile despite the turmoil inside. “Here’s your water,” she said, handing the glass to Ryan, who accepted it but never took his eyes off me.

“I think we need to talk about your father,” I finally said, the words tumbling out before I could stop them.

“My father?” Iris’s brow furrowed, confusion washed over her face. “What about him?”

“He... he struggled with addiction,” I confessed, the truth spilling out like shattered glass. “It’s why we’ve never spoken much about him.”

With each word, I could feel the air getting thicker. Ryan was silent, his gaze fixed on Iris, as if gauging her reaction. I pressed on, unable to stop myself. “I didn’t want you to know because I thought I could protect you from the pain.”

Iris's smile faded, replaced by a look of raw disbelief. “But he was—”

“He wasn’t the man you think he was,” I interrupted, my voice cracking. “He was lost in a world of his own, and it tore our family apart.”

The weight of my confession hung in the air, heavy and oppressive. Iris's face turned pale, her eyes darting to Ryan, searching for answers she hadn't yet grasped. “What do you know about him?”

“I know more than you realize,” Ryan said slowly, stepping forward, his tone grave.

Just then, Iris gasped, stepping back as Ryan dropped the bombshell about their father’s dark history, leaving her reeling.
