The Night My Daughter’s Perfect Prom Turned Into a Race Against Time to Reveal a Buried Secret

The Night My Daughter’s Perfect Prom Turned Into a Race Against Time to Reveal a Buried Secret Save

In a tense silence, I question Ryan about what he knows

“What do you know, Ryan?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper, fearing the answer. His eyes searched mine, calculating, as if gauging how much to reveal. “I overheard something at prom.”

My heart sank. “What do you mean?”

“There’s more to Iris’s father than you’ve told her.”

He leaned in closer, his tone dropping to a conspiratorial murmur. “A conversation between your sister and a friend. They were talking about addiction… about why you both never mentioned him.”

Panic clawed at my insides. Did Iris hear that too? Would this destroy her happiness? “You can’t say anything. Not to her,” I insisted, my hands shaking. “She deserves to have a little happiness tonight.”

Ryan straightened, the weight of my plea filling the space between us. “I’m not the bad guy here, but you need to understand how serious this is. Five minutes.”

I swallowed hard, the shadows of years past creeping into the corners of my mind. I had to protect Iris at all costs, but from whom? My heart raced, knowing the truth would shatter the illusion I had built around her.

As Iris returns with water, I try to maintain my composure

In that moment, I heard Iris’s footsteps—her bright smile radiating hope. I couldn’t let her see my fear. “Here you go, Ryan,” she said, oblivious to the tension hanging in the air. I caught a glimpse of Ryan’s face, his façade wavering as he accepted the glass.

“Thanks, Iris. You look amazing tonight,” he said, forcing a smile.

But I could see it—the unease bubbling beneath the surface. Iris noticed too, her brow furrowing slightly. “Is everything okay?”

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed again, the sound cutting through the moment like a knife. I glanced at the screen. It was a text from my sister, sharp and insistent.

“You need to come clean about our family’s past, now.”

My stomach twisted. I couldn’t do this in front of Iris. Just as I was about to confess, panic washed over me. What if my sister’s text meant I wasn’t the only one hiding secrets? I looked at Iris, her innocent gaze innocent, and my heart shattered at the thought of breaking her trust.
