I pulled Jake aside, my voice low and urgent. “What’s going on?”
He looked around, his brow wrinkled in worry. “There have been whispers, you know. About Vanessa.”
“Whispers? What kind of whispers?”
“Rumors about her past. Things that could ruin Richard's reputation if they got out.”
My heart raced, anxiety coiling tightly in my stomach. This was no ordinary evening. I glanced back at May, who was still oblivious, more interested in the leftover cake than the looming tension.
As Jake and I stood there, contemplating leaving early, Richard’s voice suddenly rose above the soft hum of conversations. “I can’t believe you would even consider that!”
Guests turned towards the dessert table where Richard and Vanessa were locked in a heated exchange. The air thickened, and I felt my chest tighten.
Then, with a sharp intake of breath, Vanessa’s face twisted in anger before she stormed out of the room, her heels clattering sharply on the marble floor. That moment of silence hung heavy in the air, a spotlight on the chaos about to unfold.

“We should check on Richard,” I said, tugging gently on Jake's arm. “Make sure he’s okay.”
We slipped through the throng of guests, their murmurs blending into a dull roar in my ears. Outside, the night air was a stark contrast to the frigid tension inside.
As we reached the patio, I caught a snippet of Vanessa’s voice, trembling in the dark. “You know what will happen if you don’t keep my past hidden, Richard. I’ll expose you!”
The realization hit me like a cold wave. The stakes were much higher than they seemed. I turned to Jake, my mind racing. Just a few innocent words from May, and now this? What secrets connected these two that would warrant such a threat?
Just as I began to process the weight of these revelations, May tugged on my sleeve, her wide eyes scanning the scene. “Mommy, why did she bite you?”
I felt my heart drop, panic surging through me. “May, shh, we don’t—”
Before I could pull her away, she looked up at Richard, her gaze unwavering. “But Mommy, you told me that was the lady who bites people!”
