The Day My Adopted Son Turned 18 and Said Goodbye

The Day My Adopted Son Turned 18 and Said Goodbye

The day my adopted son turned eighteen, he came down for breakfast—his suitcase overflowing—and asked if I knew about my husband’s illness. That morning, I had stuck candles shaped like a 1 and an 8 into a stack of chocolate-chip pancakes. Then, I took them out. Nolan was still asleep, and I was worried the wax might melt. My husband laughed. "You’re more nervous than he is." Our son was turning eighteen that day.

He had arrived at our home when he was twelve. He stood in the hallway, his jacket zipped up, his belongings in a trash bag that looked ready to tear open. That first evening, he asked if he could have an apple. "Of course, sweetheart. You don’t have to ask for permission to eat here." Over the next six years, he had learned to open the refrigerator without asking. To leave his sneakers in the hallway. To shout from the top of the stairs, "Mom, have you seen my hoodie?"

I couldn’t even remember how long it had been since I last paused when hearing the word "Mom." It had simply become the norm. This morning, there was a heavy thud from the staircase. I assumed he was carrying another basket of laundry. But then Nolan appeared at the entrance to the kitchen, wearing his jacket and sneakers. He had a suitcase with him. His backpack hung from his shoulder.

"Happy birthday!" I said with a smile. "Where are you headed?" He glanced at the pancakes, then at the two candles sitting near my plate. "I thought I was ready now." "Ready for what?" He didn't answer. He took his key out of his pocket and placed it on the table. "I tidied up my room. The sheets are in the washing machine—I just hadn't set the cycle yet."

My husband set down his cup. "Nolan, what’s going on?" I was still hoping this was just some spur-of-the-moment trip with friends. Then he stepped forward and hugged me. "Thank you, Mom. For all these years." As he pulled away, I grabbed his sleeve. This was a goodbye. "Wait. Where are you going?" He swallowed hard. "I don't know. The bus station, first."

A Sudden and Mysterious Departure

My hands went ice-cold. "Why?" Instead of answering, he glanced toward the hallway. "Can I take a towel? I left mine behind because you were the one who bought it." I pushed my plate away. "That towel belongs to you. So does your room. Why are you acting like you have to leave everything behind?" Nolan looked at me, then at my husband. "I thought Dad told you about his condition."

"What condition?" He gripped the handle of his suitcase even tighter. "He whispered it in my ear the day you brought me home. About the illness he's been keeping secret." I felt a wave of confusion and concern. What was Nolan talking about? My husband hadn't mentioned anything to me about being ill. I turned to him, expecting an explanation, but he just shook his head, his eyes filled with a mix of sadness and fear.

I turned back to Nolan, trying to process what was happening. "Nolan, we need to talk about this. You can't just leave like this." But he was already heading towards the door. "I have to go, Mom. I'm sorry." I followed him, trying to stop him, but he was determined. As he reached the door, he turned back to me and said, "You deserve to know the truth." And with that, he walked out, leaving me standing there, feeling lost and confused.

I turned back to my husband, who was still sitting at the table, his eyes fixed on the floor. "What's going on?" I demanded. "What condition is Nolan talking about?" But before he could answer, I heard the sound of the front door closing, and Nolan was gone. I was left standing there, wondering what had just happened, and what secrets my husband had been keeping from me. And then, just as I was about to confront my husband, the phone rang, and everything changed: the voice on the other end said, "Your husband's illness is not the only secret he's been keeping from you."

Before anyone could utter another word, the heavy oak door swung open—and what was revealed next left the entire room dead silent.
