Confronting the Past
As we walked through the park, the sun filtered through the leaves, casting playful shadows on the ground. I watched Leo’s face, a mixture of confusion and curiosity swirling in his eyes. “Dad, why did she really leave?” he asked, his voice trembling slightly.
“Leo, it’s complicated,” I replied, trying to keep my voice steady. “Your mom was dealing with things I didn’t fully understand back then. Mental health can be...” I paused, searching for the right words. “It can be really hard.”
He kicked a pebble, watching it skitter away. “But why didn’t she want me?” His question hung in the air, heavy and painful.
“It wasn’t you, buddy. It was her. She was scared, lost,” I said, memories flooding back—those late nights when the silence was deafening, the desperate calls to therapists. “She thought leaving was the best choice, even if it hurt us.”
Leo stopped walking, turning to me with a fierce determination. “I want to meet her.”
“What? Leo, you don’t know what that could bring,” I argued, my stomach twisting at the thought.
“I have questions only she can answer,” he insisted, his eyes pleading. “If she wrote that letter, she must feel something.” I could see the weight of those unanswered questions on his shoulders, and for the first time, the spark of hope flickered in his gaze.
Unexpected Revelations
After days of contemplation, I reluctantly arranged a meeting with Goldi. The café we chose had a comfortable ambiance, but my heart raced as I waited for her arrival. Leo fidgeted beside me, his excitement palpable.
When Goldi entered, the room seemed to inhale, the air thick with unspoken words. Her eyes scanned the room until they landed on us, a mixture of apprehension and hope etched across her face. I held my breath, watching Leo’s expression shift from uncertainty to a tentative smile.
“Mom?” He whispered, disbelief coloring his voice.
“Leo, I—” Goldi began, but before she could continue, Leo’s phone buzzed violently against the table. He glanced at the screen, hesitating. “I don’t recognize this number.”
“Maybe it’s a spam call,” I suggested, desperate to keep the moment uncluttered.
But he answered it, confusion quickly transforming into shock. I could see the color drain from his face as he listened intently, his grip tightening on the phone.
“What do you mean, my... my biological father?” he stammered, his eyes wide as saucers. The air crackled with tension as I processed the weight of his words.
“Leo, what did they say?” I urged, my heart pounding.
“He... he wants to meet me,” he replied, his voice trembling as he glanced at Goldi. The fragile hope that had just blossomed now felt precarious, teetering on the edge of chaos.
In that moment, I realized this was just the beginning. As Goldi opened her mouth to explain, I feared for the storm of revelations that would unravel our fragile world. And then, just as everything was about to change again, another call came through for Leo. My heart sank. It was Goldi's lawyer.
