Mia's Revelation
“A brother?” I echoed, the words barely registering in my mind. Mia’s face was a whirlpool of emotions—curiosity, excitement, fear.
“Yeah, I found out from my adoptive parents. They said I wasn’t the only one. It’s like there’s this part of our family I never knew.”
My heart raced. The past was unearthing itself like layers of an ancient secret. “I had no idea,” I whispered, feeling the weight of my choices crushing me. “I thought… I thought I was alone.”
Mia reached for my hand, squeezing it gently. “You’re not alone anymore.”
We could search for him together, a possibility as tenuous as it was thrilling. I was grateful for her presence, yet an ache remained. What if he was like her, but with a different story? A different fate?
“Let’s find him,” I said, my voice firming with resolve. “We need to heal these wounds.”
Just then, my phone buzzed on the table, shattering the moment. I glanced at the screen. An unknown number flashed ominously. My heart skipped a beat as I opened the message.
“I know where he is.”
I met Mia’s startled gaze, stunned by the implications. “Who could that be?”
“I… I don’t know,” I stuttered, the air thick with tension. “But we need to respond.”
My mind raced—could this be a blessing or a curse? Every moment felt monumental as I considered the possibility of reconnection. What if this was the answer I had been unknowingly searching for?
The Meeting
Days melted into each other as Mia and I exchanged messages, piecing together our plan. My heart thundered in my chest as I approached the designated meeting place, a café in the city.
When I walked inside, the bell above the door jingled softly, but the clamor of my thoughts drowned it out. Would he even want to see me? Would he recognize me?
Spotting a figure at the far table, I felt a wave of familiarity wash over me. He was a young man, fashionable, with a magnetism that drew attention from everyone around. My son.
“Is that him?” Mia whispered, her eyes wide with excitement.
I nodded, my throat dry. This was it. The moment I had dreamed of yet dreaded. My heart raced as I approached, his face almost obscured by a baseball cap.
“Excuse me?” I said, my voice low and trembling. He looked up, and I nearly gasped. Those features, that familiar jawline, the glint in his eye. He was my son.
“Can I help you?” There was a hint of wariness in his voice, and my heart sank.
“I’m… I’m your mother,” I managed to say, the words heavy with years of pain.
His expression shifted to confusion, then suspicion. “My mother? You abandoned me. I don’t know if I can trust you.”
Stunned, I reached out, but he flinched. “Wait,” he said. “I’m not ready for this. I’ve got my life, my career…”
My breath caught in my throat as realization struck me like a bolt of lightning. “Wait—are you... Are you an actor?”
He nodded. “Yeah, it’s just... complicated.”
“Your name,” I whispered, “what name do they call you?”
“Ryan Aldridge,” he replied, his gaze hardening. “I’m not who you think I am.”
The world spun as the truth crashed down. He thought I had abandoned him, unaware that I had never stopped searching. How could I explain the depths of my love and the sacrifices I’d made?
