Section 3
As we burst out of the warehouse, the chill night air hits us like a wave. I can feel Hannah's fingers trembling in mine. “We need to get to your truck, now,” I urge, glancing back to see if Gary is on our heels.
Once we reach the vehicle, I fumble for my phone, my heart racing. “Call the police, Pop,” Hannah whispers, her eyes darting nervously. She leans against the truck, panting, her face pale as I dial.
The dispatcher answers, her voice calm in contrast to the chaos swirling around us. “Help is on the way. Can you tell me your location?”
“We’re at the old warehouse on Cedar Road. My daughter—she's in danger,” I manage to say.
“Stay on the line. Is the threat still present?”
“I don’t know. We just escaped from him,” I respond, glancing at Hannah, who is pacing, her hands wringing the edge of her shirt.
“He... he wanted me to sign documents. He threatened me,” she stammers, leaning closer as though the very wind might carry her words away.
I blink rapidly, piecing together her fragmented sentences. “Documents for what?”
“My inheritance, Pop. He convinced my mother to go along with it. She was in on it!”
The dispatcher’s voice cuts in, grounding me, but Hannah’s expression shifts abruptly. Her eyes go wide, like saucers. “Pop, he knows we’re gone!”
“What?” I snap. “How could he?”
But even as we speak, the shadows deepen around us, and I feel the tension thicken in the air.
Section 4
We jump into the truck, the engine roaring to life beneath my hands. “Drive!” Hannah urges, her urgency palpable as we peel away from the warehouse. I glance in the rearview mirror, scanning the darkness. Then I spot it—a black SUV trailing us, its headlights slicing through the night.
“They’re coming after us!” Hannah’s voice cracks, her panic rising. “We have to go back for my mom!”
I shake my head vehemently. “No! Your mother chose this path. She’s complicit.” The determination in my voice surprises even me, but I can’t waver.
“We can’t leave her with him, Pop! She needs us!”
But before I can respond, the SUV surges forward, slamming into our rear bumper. The impact jolts us; I wrestle with the steering wheel as we veer off the road, plunging into a nearby ditch.
The truck shudders violently, glass shattering as we come to an abrupt stop. Dazed, I blink away the confusion and look at Hannah. “Are you okay?”
She nods, but her expression shifts quickly to sheer terror as she peers out the window. “It’s him, Pop! He’s coming!”
Gathering our strength, we prepare to confront Gary, adrenaline coursing through my veins. Just then, Hannah leans closer, her voice low and serious. “I have a hidden agenda, Pop. You don’t understand the full extent of this.”
My heart sinks as a wave of realization crashes over me. She had orchestrated this entire situation, and the weight of her manipulation leaves me reeling.
