Hannah in the Warehouse
I quickly got to work, my hands trembling as I fumbled with the ropes binding her wrists. “Hannah, I’m here. I’ve got you,” I whispered, urgency sharpening my voice as I finally loosened the last knot. She collapsed into my arms, shivering, the weight of her fear a palpable force.
“Pop, I… I didn’t know how to get away,” she stammered, her breath hitching. “Gary… he said if I didn’t sign, he would hurt me. It was all about the money.”
I scanned the dimly lit warehouse, my heart racing as I noticed a stack of papers scattered around her. Legal documents. My stomach sank as I realized the gravity of what they meant. “Hannah, these papers…?”
“He wants me to give up my inheritance. Everything Mom left me. He’s been coercing me,” she choked out, her voice trembling. “They’re trying to take it all.”
Her eyes widened with fear, brimming with unshed tears. “That’s why I couldn’t talk to you. I was afraid he’d find out.”
I held her tighter, anger flaring within me. “We need to get out of here. Now.”
Hiding from Gary
We stumbled toward the back door, adrenaline fueling our movements. “Pop, I overheard them,” Hannah whispered urgently as I pushed her to hide behind a stack of crates. “Gary and Mom… they were planning it all, talking about how to force me to comply.”
My heart raced. I could hear footsteps approaching, and I felt the cold grip of fear. “Stay quiet,” I urged, my pulse pounding in my ears. “He can’t find us.”
Gary's voice echoed in the warehouse, casual and confident, betraying nothing of the menace lurking beneath. “Where did she go?” he called out, and I held my breath, every fiber of my being tensed for a confrontation.
“This isn’t just about you and me, Hannah,” I whispered, trying to steady my voice. “We can outsmart him.”
But then I caught a glimpse of her face, pale and stricken with panic. “Pop, he’s not the only one…”
Before I could respond, she blurted out, “My mother is helping him!” The confession hung in the air, shattering my trust as the footsteps grew closer. My heart sank, torn between disbelief and the raw, terrifying reality of what she had just said. In that moment, I felt utterly lost.
