When I Looked Back, Eliana Was Gone
“Ma’am, are you all right?” Marcus asked, his brow furrowing as he registered my shock. I struggled to collect myself, trying to shake off the numbness in my fingers.
“That tattoo,” I whispered again, my voice barely audible. “Who is she?”
“You know her?” He searched my eyes, and I felt a wild mix of hope and fear surge within me.
“I have to know,” I pressed, and the desperation in my tone seemed to pull him in.
“Her name is Eliana,” he said, his voice dropping to a low murmur as if he feared the walls might overhear us. “I’ve been searching for her, for years. She was taken by a group involved in illegal activities.”
His words settled heavily over us, an ominous weight that wrapped around my heart. “Taken?” I echoed, struggling to comprehend.
“Yes. They changed her name and kept her hidden. I found out the truth a year ago, but…” He paused, looking away, as if grappling with his own memories. “It’s been dangerous, but I have leads. I think she’s still alive.”
The words hung in the air, weaving a fragile thread of hope amid the despair. “How do you know this?” I asked, the tremor in my voice betraying my uncertainty.
“I can’t explain everything right now, but I have evidence,” he insisted, his eyes darting toward the bakery door. There was urgency there, a sense that we didn’t have time to waste. “Please, I need you to trust me.”
“Trust you?” I scoffed, disbelief bubbling up. How could I trust a stranger who bore my daughter’s face on his skin, yet was so shrouded in mystery?
“I swear I’m not here to harm you,” he urged, desperation lacing his voice. “I want to help. I need you to see this.”
A Notebook Filled With Secrets
Marcus pulled a small, faded notebook from his pocket and handed it to me. “Eliana has kept this for years. It contains details about her life after… after everything happened.”
I took it, the worn leather feeling oddly familiar in my hands. My fingers trembled as I opened it, and I instantly recognized her handwriting. It was the same swirling script she had used in school, the letters dancing on the page.
Sketches filled the pages — drawings of people, places, and a series of addresses scrawled in the margins. Each stroke of the pencil felt like an echo of the little girl I once knew. “This… this is her,” I breathed, the realization hitting me like a wave.
“She’s alive. She’s been living a life we never knew about,” Marcus said, urgency thick in his tone.
Suddenly, a loud crash outside the bakery shattered the fragile moment. My heart raced as I glanced toward the window, dread pooling in my stomach.
“What was that?” I gasped, my instincts screaming at me to drop the notebook and run.
Before I could process it fully, I noticed them — masked figures approaching, a dark presence that sent waves of panic coursing through me. “Marcus,” I whispered, “we need to go. Now.”
Fear gripped me as I realized our sanctuary was turning into a trap, the safety of my bakery rapidly slipping away.
