I Thought I Knew Why Men Left, Until My Fake Boyfriend Uncovered My Daughters' Hidden Secret
Confrontation
I needed answers, real answers. I decided to confront Daniel about what he’d really overheard. His laughter and easygoing personality made it easy to forget his keen observations. He might have seen something different during dinner, something I hadn’t noticed.
I found him flipping through files at the office, his brow furrowing like he was wrestling with a puzzle. “Daniel,” I said, interrupting him. “We need to talk.”
Turning toward me, he raised an eyebrow. “What about?”
“About my daughters. I need to know everything you heard that night.”
His expression shifted. He was hesitating, weighing the impact of his words. “They’re scared, you know?” he said finally. “Something about you… makes them worried.”
“Worried about what?” I pressed, feeling a wave of frustration crash over me. “I’m just trying to find happiness.”
“I think they’re worried about losing you.” He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, an unmistakable tension in his voice.
“What do you mean?” I asked, my voice sharp. “They’re being melodramatic.”
Daniel shook his head. “They think you’ll date someone who won’t stick around. It’s like they believe all relationships start with a ‘goodbye’ before they even begin.”
“And that scares them for a good reason,” he added, his gaze piercing through me.
I felt something inside me shift. I was supposed to be the one protecting them, not the other way around. But was it really as simple as that? I was caught in a whirlwind of confusion, and I didn’t know how to escape.
Revelations
The next day, as I sat alone in the living room, I saw the note crumple in my pocket. I pulled it out again, rereading the words. "It’s for your own good." The message twisted, gnawed at me. I had to confront my daughters; there were too many layers hiding in what we had left unspoken.
“Can we talk again, please?” I asked them later that evening. My voice felt unsteady, but they sensed the urgency.
“About what?” Lily asked, eyes narrowing. “We already told you.”
“But I don’t think you’ve told me everything,” I countered, my voice rising. “Why don’t you want me to date?”
Clara exchanged glances with Lily. “You won’t get it,” she whispered. “You think men will love you, but they only want something else.”
“What do you mean by ‘something else’?” My heart raced again, the pieces starting to shift around the edges.
“You keep bringing them home, and they don’t stay. They don’t care about us, they just care about you.”
“And that’s not good enough,” Lily added, voice low but firm.
Every word pierced through me like arrows. I needed to understand, not just for me but for them. “Why do you think that is?”
Suddenly, Clara's eyes lit up with an idea. “You should ask Daniel. He knows things.”
My pulse quickened at the thought. What if Daniel was right? What if my daughters had more hidden truths waiting to be uncovered?
