I Thought I Knew Why Men Left, Until My Fake Boyfriend Uncovered My Daughters' Hidden Secret
The Note
I stood there, the folded piece of paper in my hands feeling like lead. Daniel's eyes were wide, shimmering with a mixture of pity and disbelief as I opened the note, trying to brace myself for what I might find. My heart thudded in my chest, thrumming louder and louder with each unfolding layer of the paper.
My oldest daughter, Lily, had a way of expressing herself that was both profound and terrifying. The words on the note were scrawled in her careful handwriting, but they felt foreign on the page. "Mom, we need to tell you something important. Please listen to us." There was more, and I could hardly read the line that followed.
“You might not understand, but it’s for your own good.”
I looked up at Daniel, searching his expression for clues. "What does that even mean?" I murmured, my voice barely a whisper. I wanted to shout, to demand answers, but the fear bubbled up inside me. What could my daughters possibly think was for my own good?
“They seemed… serious,” Daniel said slowly, his brow furrowing. “Whatever it is, it rattled me.” He paused as if weighing his words. “The way she was looking at me. Like I was in on something I shouldn’t be.”
My stomach churned. Had they been talking about the men I brought home? Had they somehow sensed my unease? Or was there something deeper lurking beneath the surface? I wanted to shake the thoughts away, but they clung tight.
I folded the note back up and tucked it into my pocket, a cold weight against my thigh. “We need to talk to them,” I finally said, my voice steadying with purpose. “They’re hiding something, and I have to know what it is.”
A Dangerous Game
That evening, I gathered the girls on the couch. With the light from the lamp casting soft shadows across their faces, it felt almost like we were playing a game. But I wasn't playing. I was on a mission.
“Can’t we just talk about something else?” Clara, my youngest, said, her voice trembling slightly. Her fingers twisted the hem of her sweater, a gesture I recognized as a sign of nerves.
“No,” I pressed. “This is important. Why did you give it to Daniel?”
Silence stretched thin between us. A clock ticked loudly on the wall, each second punctuating the tension. Lily glanced at Clara, and for a fleeting moment, it was as if they shared a secret language.
“Because we thought he would understand,” Lily finally said, her voice small and wary. “He’s not like the others.”
“What do you mean?” I said, leaning forward, desperate for clarity. “What do you know about the men I bring home?” My pulse raced, the room heating around us.
“It’s not just about them,” Clara whispered, her eyes darting around the room. “It’s about you, too.”
I needed more. “What are you talking about?” I felt my breath quicken, fear squeezing my chest. But they wouldn’t meet my gaze. Instead, they exchanged hesitant glances, as if weighing the consequences of their next words.
The Deeper Secret
After several minutes of unbearable silence, Lily finally exhaled, a shaky breath leaking all her courage. “Okay, but you have to promise you won’t get mad.”
I nodded, though a part of me braced for whatever revelation was about to come. “I promise.” But even I wasn't sure if I meant it.
“We… we’ve been talking,” Lily said, her voice cracking. “About how you keep dating these guys. We don’t want you to get hurt. We just don’t think it’s good for us.”
“Why?” I felt the anger well up, rising like bile. “Why would that matter to you?”
“Because they leave, Mom!” Clara burst out, tears glistening in her eyes. “You don’t see how it affects us. Each time, it hurts you, and it hurts us too.”
I felt a stab of confusion. “But I need to date! I need to find someone for me.”
“But it’s not about you anymore,” they chorused, voices rising, fear and worry mingling together.
“It’s about us, Mom!” they both cried, the room suddenly heavy with their emotions.
I opened my mouth, intending to dismiss their fears, but the words caught in my throat. “What do you think you know?” My heart raced again, twisting in ways I couldn't fathom. What was beneath the surface?
