Confronting the Truth
I sat across from my father, Elias, at the kitchen table, anger boiling beneath the surface. “You need to tell me what’s happening, Dad. This can’t just be coincidence.”
He shifted uncomfortably, his fingers playing with the edge of the tablecloth. “I don’t understand! They all seemed happy when they left.”
“Happy enough to vanish?” I snapped.
A shadow of guilt flickered in his eyes, but he quickly masked it with annoyance. “You’re overreacting. I’m just trying to find love!”
“Love? Or something else?” I shot back, frustration making my voice rise. “What did these women say? What did they experience?”
“I don’t know! They were lovely, and I was honest!” he exclaimed, his voice breaking slightly.
“Honest? Or hiding something?” I was losing control. The evidence I gathered from the women loomed in my mind like a ticking clock, building pressure. “I’m done with this.”
Storming out, I took a deep breath of crisp afternoon air. My heart pounded as I pulled out my phone, hands trembling. I texted Maren urgently, “We need to meet. Now.”
The Park
The park was quiet, a stark contrast to my racing thoughts as I paced beneath the sprawling oaks. Maren arrived, her expression unreadable, but I could see the tension in her shoulders.
She hesitated, eyes darting away. “It was… it was weird, okay? I got a message after we met.”
“A message?” I pressed, my pulse quickening. “About what?”
“Something about your father’s past. It shook me, really.” She swallowed hard, eyes suddenly wide. “But I don’t know if I should tell you.”
“You have to. It’s crucial!” I urged, leaning closer. “What did it say?”
Just as she reached for her phone, it buzzed sharply against the picnic table. Her face drained of color as she read the text, a gasp escaping her lips.
“No… No, it can’t be…” she whispered, her voice trembling.
“What did it say?” Panic rose within me. I took a step toward her, fear clenching around my heart.
Then she collapsed, her phone clattering to the ground. My mind raced, trying to process the horror unfolding before me.
As I knelt beside her, the startling realization pierced through my thoughts—Maren was the twin sister I never knew existed, and her life had been in peril from the very beginning, orchestrated by someone hell-bent on revenge.
