I Thought I Came Home to Find My Father, But Instead I Discovered a Secret That Changed Everything

Seeking the Truth

My heart pounded as I rummaged through my father’s old workshop, a space that still smelled faintly of sawdust and varnish, nostalgic and painful. The dusty air felt thick around me, almost suffocating, as I pushed aside tools to uncover a hidden drawer in the desk. Was it really there, or just a desperate hope?

With trembling hands, I inserted the old key that Joe had given me. The lock clicked open, and I pulled the drawer out slowly, revealing a stack of letters tied together with fraying twine. My breath caught in my throat. Each letter unfolded a world filled with my father’s regrets, his fears, and a cryptic mention of a bank account he’d set up just for me.

“No way,” I whispered, scanning the letters like a man starved for truth. Places where he yearned to rebuild our relationship, wishes he’d never acted on. I felt a swell of anger towards Grace and Ian, who had cut me out of this story.

“You’re not entitled to anything,” Ian's voice echoed from the doorway, pulling me from my thoughts.

He was there, leaning casually against the frame, a smirk dancing on his lips. “What are you doing here, Michael? Looking for a handout?”

I turned, hiding the letters behind me. “What do you want, Ian?”

“Just... to make sure you understand something,” he drawled, stepping closer. “Anything you think you find is still ours. This is our family now.”

But I couldn’t shake the feeling that something darker loomed beneath the surface. A chill went up my spine. Ian had always been manipulative; could he be behind my father’s struggles too?

The Gut Punch

I barely made it to my car before the unease unravelled into fear. As I sat there, letters still in my pocket, my phone buzzed like a swarm of bees. An unknown number flashed on the screen. My pulse quickened.

“Stop digging,” the message read. “Or you’ll regret it.”

My hands clenched the wheel. I had to confront Grace. I had to know about the bank account and those letters. But as I turned back toward the house, an unsettling realization weighed down my heart.

Inside the garage, amidst the clutter, I stumbled upon a hidden journal beneath a loose floorboard. The pages revealed not only my father's regrets but stories of Ian’s shady dealings—painful truths that tied my brother to debts that led to our father’s illness.

“It can’t be,” I muttered, the betrayal slicing into my chest like a knife. Ian had been stealing from Dad all along?

Just then, a thought struck me—if my father was aware of Ian's actions, he might have protected me somehow. With shaking hands, I flipped through the pages until I found it. A reference to a will, hidden from everyone, as if my father had foreseen the betrayal.

“Everything… left to me,” I breathed, realization crashing over me like a tidal wave. My father had wanted to ensure my future, not just to give it away to Grace and Ian.

As the pieces fell into place, I felt a mix of rage and resolve surge within me. I had the stronger claim, yet I was being pushed aside. This wasn’t over. Not by a long shot.
