Beneath the Surface

“Hello, girls,” he said, feigning warmth. It dripped with insincerity. I could see the glint of something unreadable in his eyes.

“You shouldn’t be here,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper, but it was like a match struck in a powder keg.

“I came to see how you both were doing,” he replied smoothly. “Valeria, I’m glad you’re home.”

Valeria took a step back, clutching the journal tightly. “What are you doing here?”

“I thought you might want to talk,” he responded, still trying to charm. “But I see you two have discovered some of my little secrets.”

Every part of me yearned to scream, to throw his lies back in his face, but I held my ground. “This is not your narrative to control anymore.”

He smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “Oh, who do you think you are? You’ve always been the invisible one.”

“I was never invisible,” I shot back, feeling fire ignite within me. “You simply chose not to see me.”

“You think you know the truth, but you don’t,” he snapped, his rage boiling beneath the surface. “You’re no warrior. You’re just a lost little girl.”

Every instinct screamed at me to run, but Valeria stood firm beside me. I looked at her, and we exchanged a knowing glance. This was our time to rewrite the narrative.

“You’re not the one in charge here,” Valeria said with newfound conviction.

Our father’s smile cracked, revealing something darker lurking beneath. “You think that?” he hissed, his voice dropping an octave. “You’re both just stepping stones to my greatness.”

A chill swept through the room. We had stepped into a web of manipulation that had kept us ensnared for far too long. And now it was time to come face-to-face with a truth darker than we ever bargained for.

Revelation

As the tension hung palpably between us, I could hear my heart thumping in my ears. “What do you mean?” I asked, my voice trembling. “What kind of greatness?”

His laughter rang hollow. “You have no idea how deep this goes, do you? You’ve been pawns in a game you didn’t even know you were playing.”

The little girl stood frozen, clutching her teddy bear, her innocence a stark contrast to the dark secrets swirling around us. “Tell us what you really did,” Valeria demanded, stepping forward.

He grimaced. “You think you want to know the truth? The truth is a burden, a heavy weight. Your sister needed to stay hidden, to protect the family.”

“Protect it from what?” I pressed, desperation clawing at the edges of my mind.

“From itself.” His eyes flickered left, then right, like he was gauging how much of the truth he could spill without losing his grip. “You see, Valeria’s disappearance wasn’t just about money. It was about power—our family’s power.”

“What do you mean?” Valeria repeated, her voice stronger now.

Then he leaned in closer, whispering words I could never have anticipated. “Your sister was meant to inherit not just the family business, but everything. The foundation I built would have given us control over so much.”

“And yet you left her in hell,” I spat back, realization dawning like thunder rumbling across the sky.

“What happened to her was collateral damage. But now… now she can help me finish what we started.”

Finally, the weight of his words began to settle. I understood now why he had to erase Valeria. She was the heir to the throne he had created—a throne built on shattered lives and stolen dreams. But he didn’t count on one thing: we were no longer afraid.

“No,” Valeria said, her resolve unshakable. “You’ll never control me again.”

In that moment, something shifted inside me. I realized I had underestimated my own power. With my sister at my side and the truth before us, we had everything we needed to expose our father for the monster he was.

But as we turned to leave, the final twist arrived—a sound echoing ominously from behind us. The little girl, still standing there, slowly raised her head. Her face morphed into something eerily familiar. “You’ve been bad,” she whispered, her voice a chilling reminder of the past.

“What are you—” Valeria started, but it was too late. The truth had always been closer than we thought.

The girl’s eyes flashed like lightning, revealing a truth I had never seen coming. In that moment, we weren’t just confronting our father. We were staring into the reflection of our family’s darkest secrets.

And suddenly, I wasn't sure where the play ended or the reality began. In a world filled with shadows, the one thing I knew for sure was that the darkness might just be deeper than I had ever imagined.
