I smiled as my husband left, knowing the secret accounts I’d hidden would finally free me

I smiled as my husband left, knowing the secret accounts I’d hidden would finally free me Save

She smiled while the phone rang

"Hello?" I whispered, my voice a thin thread over the hum of the heart monitor.

Michael's name flashed on the screen, a reminder of the years I had lost to his silence.

"Mom?" he said, his tone wary, as if measuring the distance between us in dollars.

I swallowed the ache and said, "I've filed a restraining order against Thomas and Brooke. The hearing is next week."

His silence lingered, then a sharp intake of breath. "You know why I stayed away, don't you?"

Memories of the scandal—our failed venture, the collapsed partnership that ruined his reputation—surfaced like ghosts.

"I was the one who signed those papers," I murmured, the weight of the ink still heavy on my conscience.

He answered, voice low, "You didn't have to. You let it happen."

My hand trembled on the bedside rail. "I made sure the accounts were in my name. He thinks he can strip me of everything."

He laughed, a brittle sound, "He'll try, but the court will see the truth. He's not the only one with secrets."

The line crackled, and I heard the distant clang of a wheelchair. "I need you there," I said, the plea thin.

Michael hesitated, then replied, "I'll be there. Not for you, but for the truth about Grant."

I closed my eyes, feeling the hospital air prick my skin, and smiled, a smile that hid the terror of the next battle.

Judge Ramirez's courtroom held its breath

The marble steps echoed as I entered, my gown rustling like dry leaves.

Judge Ramirez sat tall, her eyes sharp, a folder of papers resting on the bench.

"Mrs. Grant," she said, voice steady, "the restraining order is noted, but the real question is ownership."

Thomas stood near the back, his suit immaculate, his smile brittle.

Ramirez flipped a page, her fingers flickering. "Grant Holdings is under investigation for fraud. The alleged transfer of shares to your name, Mr. Grant, is being scrutinized."

A murmur rippled through the room; the air grew heavy with anticipation.

Then a door opened and Michael stepped in, his briefcase clutched like a lifeline.

"Your Honor," he said, voice calm, "I have documents that were never filed.

"These are the original founding deeds, signed before any of the recent transfers," he continued, placing a leather-bound ledger on the bench.

The judge lifted an eyebrow. "And you, Mrs. Grant, are aware of these?"

I felt a cold knot in my stomach. "I saw them once, hidden in the attic. I thought they were old."

Ramirez leaned forward, eyes narrowing. "Mr. Grant, you have been silent for too long. Care to explain the shell corporation?"

Thomas's face tightened, his jaw a clenched fist.
