Unfolding Drama

The next week flew by with more auditions, and Liam dove into his new role. I found Susan more often at our home; she would come over to help him rehearse. I started looking forward to those moments, the laughter that filled the house, the way they bounced ideas off each other. But every good moment was accompanied by reminders of that wedding day.

Then one afternoon, as I was working on dinner, I overheard them talking in the living room. Liam was venting about Monica, and Susan was listening intently. My heart swelled at how well she seemed to understand him, but then it twisted painfully as he mentioned me.

“My dad tried so hard to keep me from feeling like crap,” he said. “But I feel like I can’t get away from her.”

“You know, Liam,” Susan's voice was soft but firm. “You can always talk to him. It’s okay to feel angry.” I stopped chopping vegetables and leaned against the counter, still somehow hidden, my heart beating faster.

Just then, the doorbell rang, shattering the intimate atmosphere. I opened the door to find a package—a thick envelope addressed to me. I took it back to the kitchen, curiosity gnawing at me.

Inside, an invitation to a gala—Monica’s new fiancé’s event. My stomach dropped. Why was she still pulling me in? I could feel the sharp edges of old wounds, but something about the timing felt calculated. A part of me wanted to throw it away, but confusion gnawed at my thoughts.

Later that night, I shared the invite with Liam and Susan, who immediately sensed the tension. “You’re not going, are you?” Liam asked, his face pale. “It sounds like a trap.”

“No,” I replied, “but I can’t just ignore it. She might use it against us.”

But as I said those words, more questions flooded my mind: Why did she want me there? What game was she playing now? I felt trapped between wanting to protect Liam and needing to confront the past.

A Dangerous Path

Days turned into a week filled with preparation. I could hardly put the gala out of my mind. Something about the mounting tension felt like a message I couldn't ignore. Monica's past seemed to stretch into the present, painting my reality with hues of her chaos.

Then, the night of the gala came, and I found myself standing in front of the mirror, adjusting my tie nervously. “Dad, you look good,” Liam commented, a half-smile on his face, trying to lighten the mood.

“Thanks,” I muttered, thinking how odd it felt to dress up for an occasion steeped in my past. As we pulled into the parking lot, I felt waves of anxious energy pouring from Liam. He looked out the window, eyes wide with fear.

“What if she tries to talk to me again?” he whispered, clutching the door's handle. “What if... what if she tries to make me feel bad?”

“You just stay close to me,” I assured him, “and if she tries anything, we’ll leave. I promise.” But even as I said it, unease rippled through me. Could I really protect him from her manipulation?

Inside the gala, chandeliers flickered overhead, sparkling like the false promises Monica had made in the past. I felt her presence before I saw her. The way she moved through the crowd effortlessly, as if she were on stage again, controlling every moment. She caught my eye across the room, lips curling into the tight smile I remembered all too well.

But she was not the only one I caught a glimpse of. There, in the corner, stood Susan. She had shed her casual clothes for something elegant, and she caught my gaze at just the right moment. I felt something shift between us. She seemed intrigued by the chaos unfolding before us. I didn’t know if she was there to support or observe. Did she know how much I still battled with my past?
