I Hired an Actress to Pretend to Be My Wife and Uncovered the Truth About My Ex at Her Wedding

Awkward Beginnings

Three weeks later, I sat in the back row of the school auditorium while Liam auditioned for a play. The smell of popcorn lingered in the air, mingling with the scent of freshly varnished wood that always gave me hope in these old buildings. I watched as he stepped onto the stage, shoulders slightly hunched, hands shoved deep into his pockets. My heart swelled with pride, a feeling I hadn't allowed myself in years.

He took a deep breath, and as the spotlight hit his face, something shifted. He transformed into someone else, becoming that brave kid I’d always wished he could be. A little bit of me, I wanted to believe. Still, the memory of Monica's wedding remained etched in my mind like a scar: Liam's brave words ringing through that room, shattering the illusions she had built around her new life.

Another kid auditioned for the role of the prince, a boy with a shiny new haircut and a name I heard drumming through the hallways. None of that seemed to matter as Liam stood there, pouring everything into his lines. He was no longer just my son. He was an actor. I could hardly remember the shy boy who once clung to my leg at the playground.

Susan had started helping him after school. At first, it had been about the play, but slowly, she became a constant in his life. I couldn't dismiss the friendship they were forming. I didn't know how I felt about her being around so much. She’d become a bridge between the life I used to have and the new one Liam was carving out.

After the audition, Liam scanned the dimly-lit audience, finding me immediately. His eyes sparkled with excitement. I clapped loudly, proud and scared for what came next. I didn't know how he would feel about the part. Would Monica's shadow loom over him? Or was he free now?

The Truth Revealed

We drove home in silence, the weight of the day settling in, pressing down on us like an old, heavy blanket. “Dad,” Liam finally said, breaking the quiet, “can we talk?” My heart began to race. I turned onto our street, and in the dim light of the streetlamp, I caught a glimpse of his small, anxious face.

“About the wedding?” he continued, his voice soft, and I felt the urge to reach out, to tell him he didn’t have to go there. But the question hung in the air like fog, cold and dense.

“Sure,” I replied, keeping my tone steady despite the clenching in my stomach. I parked the truck and turned to face him, bracing myself.

“Why didn’t you just tell her to leave us alone?” He looked out the window, jaw tight, as if holding back kind words he was afraid to say. “Seeing you like that... it was so hard.”

My heart sank. “I thought she was going to keep doing that. I thought maybe pretending was the only way to keep it from breaking you.” It felt weak, even as I spoke. I realized that maybe I was the one who needed to escape from her shadow.

Liam turned back to me, eyes narrowing. “But you didn't just let it go. You hired someone to pretend! That’s not how you fix things!”

“I know,” I whispered, regret flooding me. The truth was, I had thought this fake life, this performance, would shield him from Monica's cruelty. Instead, it just opened doors we didn’t know existed.

Liam leaned back, arms crossed. “I think I hate her,” he said suddenly, voice shivering with emotion. “I can’t believe she would want me there just to show off.”

His words landed heavily, and I had to process them. The truth hit me like a punch: all my efforts to make things right had only exposed more hurt.
