The Truth Comes Crashing Down
“You’ve been spreading lies about me, Vale!” Corin’s voice blasted through the café, startling the other patrons. His face was contorted with rage, anger directed at Dorian and me both. “You want to ruin my life?”
I felt the heat rise in my cheeks, the embarrassment clawing at my insides. “Corin, please,” I interrupted, my voice trembling. “You need to tell me the truth.”
Corin’s eyes narrowed, and he stepped closer, jabbing a finger toward Dorian. “He’s trying to manipulate you. He’s been feeding you nonsense to turn you against me.”
“Nonsense?” I shot back, my heart racing. “What if he’s right? What if there’s more to what I don’t know?”
His expression faltered for a split second, and in that moment, I found strength. “I deserve answers, Corin! All those years I sacrificed... I deserve the truth!”
Corin’s facade cracked, his defensiveness giving way to something raw. “Fine! You want the truth?” he spat, voice dripping with contempt. “I always had a plan B. I didn’t just throw away our life! I was escaping.”
The word hit like a slap. Escape? I felt my stomach churn. “What do you mean, escaping?”
“I can’t believe you would think Dorian cares about you. He’s playing you!” Corin shouted, desperation creeping into his tone, but I pressed on, hungry for clarity.
“Then tell me what you were planning!” I demanded, feeling the weight of the entire café’s gaze on us.
His eyes glistened with something akin to regret. “It wasn’t just an affair. It was…” Corin hesitated, grappling with the torrent of emotions spilling from his lips. “I was trying to reconnect with my sister.”
The Shocking Truth Unveiled
A silence fell over us, thick and suffocating. “Your sister?” I repeated, struggling to process his words.
“Yes! I haven’t seen her in years,” he confessed, voice barely above a whisper. “When my family fell apart, I lost her too. I was trying to reach out to her, trying to fix what was broken. I thought... I thought it would hurt you to know.”
The pieces of my shattered trust clattered around us; what had I sacrificed for? The love, the dreams—were they all built on half-truths? “So you lied to me... to protect me?” I stammered, disbelief washing over me.
“I never wanted to hurt you!” he pleaded, his tone softening, but I felt my resolve hardening. “I thought keeping my family’s mess away from you was the right choice.”
“Your family’s mess?” I echoed, anger bubbling to the surface. “What about the mess we built together? What about everything I lost for you?”
Corin lowered his head, shame draping over him like a heavy blanket. “I thought I was keeping you safe…”
But those words meant nothing as my heart crumbled. Everything I believed about us, about the sacrifices, shattered like fragile glass. Did we ever stand a chance? Why hadn’t I seen the signs? I stared at him, realization settling in. The future I fought for may not have ever existed.
