I Gave Up My Dream Wedding to Reclaim My Identity as an Orphan

Confronting the Shadows

The revelation hung in the air like smoke, gnawing at me. “You have no idea what he did to keep his family together.” Those words echoed in my mind as I paced the length of my tiny apartment. Why hadn’t he told me? Why had he let me think I was the only one burdened by the weight of family legacy?

I shot off a text to Derek, my fingers trembling: We need to talk. Now. His reply came almost instantly: Meet me at that café. I’ll be there. I swallowed hard, half-excited, half-terrified.

When I arrived, he was already sitting at a back table, the sunlight cutting through the windows, illuminating the tension in his face. “Vivian,” he began, his voice laced with concern. “What’s going on?”

“What’s going on is your mother—your mother made me feel like I’m less than human! She dug a knife into my past, and you let her.” I leaned forward, my heart racing. “What about you, Derek? Do you have your own skeletons?”

His jaw tightened. “You know my family—”

I interrupted him, desperation creeping into my tone. “No, I don’t. Not really. Tell me the truth.”

His eyes flickered with something deep and unresolved. “I didn’t want to burden you,” he murmured. “I’ve carried my own darkness.”

“What do you mean?” I pressed, barely able to breathe. This was the moment. The truth hung just out of reach.

He took a deep breath, his hands rhythmically drumming the table. “I was an orphan too, Vivian. I had my own struggles to survive. I thought I could protect you from it.”

The words landed like a punch. “You?” I whispered, my heart racing. “You’re just like me?”

“I didn’t choose it, and I didn’t want to share it. I was scared you’d see me the way your family does.” His voice broke. “I didn’t want to lose you, too.”

And with that, the floodgates opened, all our insecurities spilling out like dark ink. We were two orphans standing amidst the ruins of our pasts, desperately trying to find place and purpose in each other’s arms.

Revealing the Truth

As we sat in the café, a cautious warmth enveloped us, but doubt still crept into my mind. Was this confession meant to bring us closer, or would it just complicate things further? “You know, Constance doesn’t care about us,” I said, biting my lip. “All she cares about is maintaining her image.”

Derek nodded, but there was something unresolved behind his eyes. “I thought if I built a life around her expectations, I could escape the judgment. I was wrong.”

Suddenly, the memory of Constance’s voice rang in my ears. But I blinked the thought away. “It doesn’t matter anymore,” I insisted, leaning closer. “We can face this together.”

Just as his eyes softened, a terrible realization struck me. “What if this is all just Constance’s game? Maybe she’s setting us up to fail.”

Before he could respond, a sharp pang of doubt twisted in my stomach. What if she knew more than she let on? “You realize this could ruin everything—”

But just then, a glimmer of understanding passed between us. Derek reached out, taking my hand. “If we stand together, nothing will tear us apart.”

The moment felt fragile and electric, yet I sensed a deeper struggle beneath it. My heart raced, torn between hope and fear as I clung to his words, uncertain if love could truly conquer the weight of our legacies. What would it take to build a future from the ashes of our pasts?
