Chapter 3: Embracing My Identity

The moment I stepped into Lila’s apartment, the smell of vanilla candles wrapped around me like a warm hug. She was slumped on the couch, her favorite throw draped over her legs, eyes wide with concern.

“Vivian, what happened?”

“Derek’s family… they don’t want me,” I spat, biting back tears. “Constance made it clear I don’t belong.”

Lila's expression softened. “You’re not just some outsider. You have every right to be there.”

“But it feels impossible,” I confessed, pacing. “I keep trying to prove myself, but they see me as a charity case.”

“What do you want?” Lila asked, her tone serious.

“To be enough for him. To not feel like I’m dragging him down.” My voice shook with vulnerability. “What if I’m not good enough?”

Lila shifted closer, determination in her eyes. “You need to confront Constance. Don’t let her narrative define you. Take back your story.”

“But what if she tears me apart?”

“Let her try. You’re stronger than you think, Vivian.”

Her faith ignited something within me, a flicker of courage in the shadows of my doubt. “Maybe you’re right,” I said, my resolve hardening.

Chapter 4: Standing My Ground

The charity event buzzed with laughter and clinking glasses, the chandeliers overhead casting a golden glow. My heart raced as I spotted Constance across the room, her presence like a storm cloud threatening rain.

“You can do this,” I whispered to myself, straightening my dress.

With each step towards her, the chatter faded into a dull hum. I could feel her eyes cut through the crowd, and I steeled myself. “Constance,” I called, forcing confidence into my voice.

She turned, feigning surprise. “Vivian. What a… pleasant surprise.”

“We need to talk,” I stated, my throat dry. “I won’t let you undermine me anymore.”

For a moment, the world around us faded. It was just us. “You know, family is about love and support—not lineage,” I continued, determined.

Constance’s lips curled into a condescending smile. “And you think love can erase your past? You don’t belong here.”

“That’s not true! I refuse to be a footnote in Derek’s story.”

A flicker of surprise crossed her face, but it quickly faded. “You are not the woman Derek deserves,” she shot back, her voice colder than ever.

I pressed on, feeling the weight of my childhood lift. “I am not defined by my background. I am more than you see.”

Just when I thought I had gained the upper hand, Constance leaned closer, a smirk playing on her lips. “You think Derek is perfect? You have no idea what he did to keep his family together.”

The story continues…
