Facing Reality
As I paced the living room, I spotted Trevor, his eyes glued to his phone. The sound of the twins cooing in their crib barely registered with him. Anger bubbled up inside me. “Are you really just going to ignore them?”
He looked up, defensive. “I’m just taking a break. It’s been a hell of a few days for both of us.”
“A break? You’ve been gone! You don't get to pretend this is okay.” My voice shook with emotion. “You weren’t here. You can’t just avoid them and me because you’re scared.”
“Maybe we weren’t ready for this after all!” he snapped, throwing his phone down.
His words hit me like a slap. I stared at him, my heart pounding. “How can you say that? We’ve wanted this for so long, and you just... left!”
He scowled, and the silence filled the room, thickening the air. I could feel the edges of my vision blurring with tears. I turned away from him, unable to look at the man I thought I knew. “I can’t do this right now,” I whispered, retreating from the room.
As I walked away, the sound of the twins’ cries began to reach a crescendo. I had wanted to confront him, but now it felt like all I was leaving behind was his panic.
A Moment of Clarity
In the quiet comfort of the kitchen, my mother wrapped her arms around me. “You’re doing an amazing job,” she said softly, brushing a stray hair from my forehead.
I shook my head, feeling the weight of exhaustion and disappointment. “He should have been here. I can’t keep doing this alone.”
“It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Prioritize yourself and those precious babies. They need you well.”
Meanwhile, Trevor seemed to be fumbling in the living room, trying to engage with the twins. I couldn’t help but steal a glance. He was on the floor, struggling with a diaper change.
“No, no, you do it like this!” I heard him mutter, his frustration palpable.
A smile crept across my face despite everything. Seeing him attempting to take responsibility felt like a flicker of hope. But was it genuine or just a phase brought on by guilt?
As I made my way back to the living room, I felt a strange mix of emotions. I was about to forgive him, to extend an olive branch and start anew when suddenly, the shrill sound of my phone broke the moment.
“Trevor,” I said, turning to him, “can you grab that?”
He nodded, and I saw him reaching for it. But what came next froze the air around us. “It’s Destiny,” he said, the color draining from his face. “She wants to meet.”
