Desperation and Betrayal
Caleb's face fell as he hung up the phone. “They’re in trouble,” he said, his voice trembling slightly. “The foster family... they might have to move her far away.”
My heart sank. “What do you mean, move her? We just found her! We can’t let that happen!” Panic clawed at my throat, a mix of fear and frustration bubbling to the surface.
Caleb grabbed my hand, his grip firm but desperate. “We need to think. We could talk to social services, explain everything…”
But just as I opened my mouth to respond, my eyes caught movement across the room. Lena stood half-hidden behind a row of chairs, watching us. A smile, cold and knowing, crept across her lips.
“She shouldn’t be here,” I muttered, my heart racing. “Why is she watching us?”
Caleb turned, tension etched on his face. “We can’t focus on her right now. We need to figure this out.”
“No,” I whispered, a chill washing over me. “She knows something.”
As we started to move towards the exit, a sense of dread settled in my chest. Lena's smile widened, and I felt like she was enjoying our turmoil. We were running out of time, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that she was involved in this far more than I realized.
The Dark Truth Unveiled
“What do you know about her?” I hissed at Caleb as we hurried past Lena, my heart pounding with every step. “Why is she so interested in our daughter?”
“I don’t know!” Caleb exclaimed, frustration coloring his voice. “I just know she’s been involved in the case. But…”
Before he could finish, Lena stepped in front of us, her expression shifting to something almost predatory. “You really don’t remember me, do you?”
My breath caught in my throat. “What?”
“Lena,” she stated, her voice dripping with sweetness that felt so wrong. “I was the social worker who facilitated your adoption. I’ve been keeping track of your daughter… and you.”
Caleb’s eyes widened, disbelief splashed across his face. “You? But… why?”
Lena leaned closer, her smile vanishing. “Because the truth is, you two weren’t ready to be parents. I thought I was saving her.”
“Saving her?” I shouted, anger igniting within me. “You were part of that decision! You helped take her away!”
Lena straightened, her demeanor unsettling. “I’ve been trying to ensure that she stays safe from people like you who just can’t let go of the past.”
My mind reeled. “So you’ve been manipulating Caleb?” Rage pulsed through me. “You’ve kept him tethered to this secret?”
As the realization crashed over me like a freight train, I felt the ground beneath my feet shift. Caleb was never the only one harboring secrets; Lena had orchestrated this entire charade. My heart raced, panic clawing at me as I realized we might have just lost our last chance to bring our daughter home.
