Feeling Betrayed
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” I demanded, my voice wavering between anger and disbelief. “You’ve been lying to me, Caleb!”
His eyes darted around the empty hallway as if searching for an escape. “I thought it would be easier for you to move on. I was scared to tell you.”
“Scared? Scared of what, Caleb? That I would want our daughter back?” My fists clenched at my sides, a wave of betrayal washing over me. “You have no idea how painful this is!”
“No, you don’t understand.” He took a step closer, his face a mix of fear and guilt. “I didn’t want to hurt you. I thought—”
“You thought what? That I wouldn’t care? That I’d just forget her?” I could feel my heart pounding as everything crumbled around us. “While you were visiting her every week, I was here, alone!”
Before he could respond, a figure emerged from the shadows of the corridor. Lena. I hadn’t even noticed her lurking there, her eyes fixed on us.
“I can help you understand everything,” she said, her voice steady and calm. But I felt a rush of instinctive distrust propelling me back. “Stay out of this!”
Answers and Ultimatums
Lena stepped forward, unyielding. “You need to hear me. I know the details of the adoption; I can help you reclaim your daughter.”
The hope in her words tugged at something deep inside me, even as resentment bubbled to the surface. “Why should I trust you?” I snapped.
“Because she deserves to know her parents,” Lena insisted, her expression shifting between sympathetic and calculating. “But it won’t be easy. There are challenges—”
“I don’t care about the challenges! Just get to the point!” I interrupted, desperation creeping into my voice.
Caleb’s gaze fell to his phone, which had just begun to vibrate violently against his thigh. He hesitated, his hand shaking as he answered it.
“Hello?” His expression transformed, a mask of confusion overtaking his features. I could feel the air grow heavy with tension.
“What’s wrong?” I pressed, my heart racing. “Caleb, talk to me!”
He nodded slowly, listening intently, but his skin paled visibly. “I… I see.” His grip tightened on the phone until his knuckles turned white.
“Caleb!” I shouted, feeling panic rising within me. “What’s happening?”
As he hung up, I caught a glimpse of Lena slipping away, a sinister smile creeping on her face. My stomach dropped as fear and confusion flooded my mind.
