I Faced My In-Laws with Nothing but My Children and a Yellow Folder That Changed Everything

I Faced My In-Laws with Nothing but My Children and a Yellow Folder That Changed Everything Save

Section 5

The air felt heavy, electric with tension as Mara stood in front of the police car, her heart racing. The officer examined her, and Mara forced herself to breathe, to look calm for the children. “Ma’am, can you explain what’s happening here?” he asked, his voice steady.

“We need help. My father-in-law is trying to take my children away from me. He just kicked us out of our home,” Mara said, her voice quivering but resolute. She glanced at her kids, their faces pale, eyes wide with uncertainty.

Victor stepped forward, a smug smile on his face. “She’s unstable, officer. You should see the way she talks. She’s not fit to care for those children.”

His words cut deep, but Mara couldn't show her hurt. “That’s not true! I’ve cared for my kids every day! You can ask anyone!” She felt the weight of their eyes, the pressure to maintain her composure.

“Ma’am, I need you to calm down,” the officer said, his tone turning brusque. “We have to hear both sides.”

Caleb stepped closer to her, clenching his fists. “You can’t believe him! Our dad wouldn’t want this!”

Mara’s heart sank. “Please, listen to us,” she pleaded, her voice cracking. “We just lost Rowan.”

The officer frowned, glancing between Victor and Mara. “I’ll need to separate you for questioning—not because I believe either side, but to figure this out.”

Mara's stomach twisted. “No! You can't take them away from me!” She reached for her children, but the officer stepped in, blocking her path. “I’m sorry, ma’am, but it’s protocol.”

In a moment that felt like an eternity, the officer led Caleb, Wren, and the twins away. Mara whispered, “Everything will be okay,” but the knot in her chest tightened. The rain still poured, drowning her thoughts in chaos.

Section 6

The fluorescent lights of the police station flickered as Mara stumbled out, her heart heavy with dread. “Where are my kids?” she demanded, her voice echoing through the stark hallway.

A clerk behind the desk looked up. “Your father-in-law has taken custody, claiming you are unfit to care for them.”

“What?” The world spun, her knees felt weak. “Victor can’t do that! I have rights!”

The clerk shrugged. “You’ll have to speak to a lawyer about it.”

Mara turned to leave, panic clawing at her throat. Outside, the rain had stopped, but the cold air clung to her skin. She had no home, no children, just the gut-wrenching sense of loss.

As she reached for her phone, it buzzed. A text. An unknown number. “Call me. I have information that could change everything.”

She hesitated, but desperation prodded her to dial. A lawyer’s voice filled her ear, steady and firm. “I have reason to believe your father-in-law is hiding a trust fund set up for your children by your late husband. His actions may have repercussions.”

Mara’s breath hitched. “What do you mean?”

“There are circumstances surrounding your husband’s death that should be investigated. Your father-in-law may have known more than he let on.”

Shock rippled through her. The world fell silent as pieces began to fall into place. Victor was not just trying to take her children; he was entangled in something far darker. An urge for revenge surged within her.

“Thank you,” she whispered, a flicker of hope igniting in the void of her despair. This wasn’t over. Not by a long shot.
