Section 3
Mara sat on a damp park bench, rain drumming on the metal frame. Her heart raced as she stared at the screen of her phone, the unknown number blinking ominously. “What does this mean?” she whispered to herself, feeling the weight of her family's future pressing down on her shoulders.
Caleb leaned in. “Mom, who texted you?” His brow furrowed with concern. Wren, trying to soothe Finn and the twins, shot her brother a worried glance.
“That’s impossible,” Caleb said, shaking his head. “Dad would’ve told us.”
Mara’s mind raced. What if Victor had been hiding this? “We need to find out more,” she declared, her voice gaining strength. “You and Wren can help me dig into this. We have to figure out how to confront your grandfather.”
“What about Finn and the twins?” Wren asked, looking over where they were giggling, oblivious to the storm swirling around them.

With renewed determination, Mara and the children approached the estate once more. The wind howled through the trees, and dark clouds loomed above. She took a deep breath, wishing for the strength of her husband to guide her.
Victor stood on the porch, arms crossed, a menacing sneer etched into his face. “Back again, Mara? Haven’t you had enough humiliation?”
“You expect me to believe that?” Victor spat, his eyes narrowing. “You’re not even worthy of a penny.”
She stepped closer, heart pounding. “You don’t own their future. I won’t let you ruin their lives because of your twisted pride.”
The tension crackled in the air, making her skin prickle. Victor’s face shifted, showing a flicker of something—fear?—before he regained his composure. “Try it, and I’ll call the police. Let them see how unfit you truly are.”
“You’re making a big mistake,” Victor sneered, a triumphant glint in his eyes. “You’ll regret this.”
“What have you done?” Panic rushed through Mara as she glanced at the children. Caleb caught her eye and nodded, a silent promise of support. But as the police car pulled into the driveway, dread twisted in her stomach.
This was her moment to fight, but fear gripped her. What if the police believed Victor? What if they took her children away for good? In that instant, she realized the stakes had never been higher—everything was on the line.
And in the charged silence before the officers emerged from their car, Mara's heart raced with a single thought: she could lose her children forever.
