Six months later, I walked into the boardroom wearing a tailored suit. It felt strange but empowering, the fabric clinging to my shape, accentuating rather than hiding.

People nodded at me, some even smiled. I was not just a mother or a shadow; I was the leader now. The murmurs about my appearance had faded, replaced by respect.

But then, a familiar face appeared in the doorway—Vanessa from Marketing, a sharp smile on her lips. She was there for a meeting, yet her gaze flickered over my shoulder like she was searching for something—or someone.

“What can I do for you, Vanessa?”

Her eyes narrowed. “We need to talk about Brandon.”

That name felt like a splinter. I thought I had buried my past, locked it away in a vault. “I don’t want to discuss him.”

“Too bad,” she fired back, arms crossed, her confidence unwavering. “Because he’s back in town.”

“And he’s not alone,” she added, a hint of something darker lurking in her tone.

My heart raced. I locked my gaze onto her, the implications settling in, thick and suffocating. “What do you mean?”

Vanessa hesitated, her expression shifting from confidence to something almost sympathetic. “He’s… well, he’s changed.”

“How?”

She leaned closer, her voice barely a whisper, “He’s been talking to people about you.”
