Section 5
I sat cross-legged on the floor of my mother's tiny room, surrounded by papers. The old bank statements lay before me, their contents telling a story I couldn't ignore. My heart raced as I skimmed through the figures, each transaction growing increasingly suspicious.
“My God, he’s been taking money,” I whispered, disbelief tightening in my chest. Lines of unauthorized withdrawals were highlighted, revealing months of theft that I couldn’t fathom. I wanted to scream, but instead, I forced myself to focus. I needed proof.
Just then, faint voices floated down from the living room. I crept closer, pressing my ear against the wall. Derek's voice carried clearly. “We’ll just tell her it’s for the new renovations. She won’t know the difference.”
A wave of nausea hit me. “Evicting her?” I held my breath as I listened more intently.
“She’s not fit to live here anymore,” Melissa added, the casual cruelty in her tone cutting me deeper than any knife.
My mind raced. They were planning on kicking her out? I had to act. I had the evidence now. My fingers trembled as I gathered the bank statements into a folder. I was ready to confront them, ready to fight for my mother.

My heart hammered in my chest as I faced Derek and Melissa in the living room. I slapped the folder down on the coffee table, the sound echoing like a gunshot. “I know what you’ve been doing. You’re stealing from Mom!”
They exchanged glances that fueled my anger. “You’re overreacting,” Derek said dismissively, his smirk barely wavering.
“She’s fine with it,” Melissa chimed in, her voice dripping with false sweetness. “Mom prefers it this way.”
“Don’t lie!” My voice surged with emotion. “I’m taking legal action, and you both will pay for this!”
As I spoke, my mother stepped in from the kitchen, a calmness about her that pierced through my rage. “Iris,” she said softly, the weight of her gaze crushing me. “I need to explain.”
My breath hitched at the somber look in her eyes. “You’ve known?”
“I wanted to protect you,” she replied, her voice trembling. “I didn’t want you to worry about us. Derek... he thought it would be best if I just... went along.”
I felt the ground shift beneath my feet. “Best for who?” I demanded, the betrayal hitting me like a physical blow.
“For you,” she whispered. “Iris, you’ve worked so hard abroad. I didn’t want you to come back to this.”
“You let him take advantage of you!” I shouted, the hurt boiling over. “You’ve been complicit in stealing your own life!”
“It was only to spare you,” she insisted, tears brimming in her eyes. “Derek thought... he thought you’d get back and know nothing.”
Everything I thought I was fighting for shattered around me. The warmth of family faded into a cold reality. “So, I’ve been fighting against my own family this whole time?” I whispered, the bitterness tasting like ash in my mouth.
