I Came Home to Surprise My Mom, Only to Find Her Working as a Maid in Her Own House

I Came Home to Surprise My Mom, Only to Find Her Working as a Maid in Her Own House Save

Determined to Uncover the Truth

The stale air in the café weighed on me as I sat across from Sam, the old family friend who had once been my go-to for summer housing advice. “Iris, you're sure about this?” he asked, concern etched in his brow. I nodded, my heart racing with urgency.

“Derek and Melissa are hiding something. I need you to help me find the truth about the house,” I insisted, pressing the envelope of documents into his hands. His fingers brushed against mine, sending a chill down my spine. “Okay, let’s see what we can uncover.”

Hours passed as we sifted through papers, each line revealing more chaos behind the seemingly tranquil facade. “Look at this,” Sam said, pointing to a line item on a bank transaction. “This withdrawal is dated just before your mom was forced to sign over her checks. There’s something off here.”

“They’ve taken advantage of her,” I gasped, the pieces clicking into place. “They’re planning to sell the house without her consent.”

As Sam and I continued digging, a weight settled in my stomach. “Iris, it gets worse,” he muttered, suddenly quiet. “This house is at risk of foreclosure. There are late payments… and look at these transactions.”

I leaned closer, disbelief washing over me. “You mean they might’ve siphoned money from her accounts? How could they?” A fire ignited in my chest, my determination shifting to a furious resolve. “We have to confront them. Now.”

Confronting Melissa

With the evidence burning a hole in my pocket, I marched into the house, heart pounding. I found Melissa lounging casually in the living room, her phone glued to her hand. “Melissa!” I called out, her head snapping up in surprise.

“What is it, Iris?” she replied, feigning a lack of interest. “I’m kind of busy here.”

“You’re busy? While your mother is literally living like a maid?” I spat, brandishing the bank statements. “These transactions—what do you have to say about them?”

“Oh please, Iris,” she drawled, a smirk creeping onto her face. “Mom likes to help out. You know how she is.”

“Help out? This isn’t help; this is exploitation!” I clenched my fists, feeling the heat rise in my cheeks. “You’re treating her like a servant in her own home.”

Melissa leaned back, eyes narrowing. “You spent six years abroad, Iris. Maybe if you cared more, you’d realize how much she needs us.”

“Cared more?” I shot back, my voice trembling with rage. “You have no idea what I've sacrificed.”

“Actually, I do,” she retorted. “And I have proof that it’s you who neglected her.”

My heart dropped, the weight of her words crashing over me. Just then, Derek walked in, a smug grin plastered across his face, an envelope clutched tightly in his hands. “Did someone say neglect? I have something that might change your perspective, Iris.”

In that moment, my world tilted, realization dawning on me of the intricacies of their deception. Just as I thought I had the upper hand, Mom stepped into the room, a shadow of familiarity cloaked in determination.

“I know about the betrayal,” she said quietly, her voice steady. “And I’ve been complicit in it all along.”
