I Built My New Life While He Laughed at the Ruins of Our Old One
Crossing Paths
Richard didn’t notice me at first, but when he turned, the recognition in his eyes was unmistakable. A mixture of surprise and anger. I was about to turn away—a last-minute decision to escape—but instead, I walked toward him, ready to face whatever came next.
“Alexandra,” he said, his voice flat and rehearsed. “I didn’t expect to see you.”
“I’m sure you didn’t,” I replied, keeping my tone cool. “What do you want?”
He leaned against the aisle, casually flipping the price tag on a jar of pesto. “Just came for a few things. Didn’t think I’d run into you.”
“And yet, here we are,” I said, crossing my arms. “What’s next? A chat with Valerie about how to handle ex-wives?”
Richard smirked, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “You’re bigger than this, Alex. You should be moving on.”
“That’s rich coming from you.”
Our conversation was a dance of sharp words and clipped breaths. Underneath it all, I felt the old wounds throbbing. The shattered pieces of what had once been our life.
Tension Rising
He leaned closer, and I caught a whiff of his cologne, a scent I once loved. “You should really think about how this will affect the kids.”
“And you should think about how your choices have affected them. They’re terrified.”
“You think I don’t know that?” His voice dropped. “I have to start over too, Alex.”
“You don’t get to play the victim. Not after what you’ve done.”
The air crackled between us. It was all too palpable—the unresolved tension, the unfinished business. I wanted to scream at him, to rip apart the layers of lies that had suffocated our marriage.
But instead, I turned away, heart pounding, filled with a mix of regret and relief.
Over the next few days, I couldn’t shake the encounter. It lingered like smoke in my lungs. Richard had always been able to get under my skin, but this time, it felt different. I couldn’t let it consume me.
“You need to focus, Mom,” Dylan said one night over dinner, sensing my unease. “We’re doing okay. You’re doing okay.”
I smiled, his words a grounding force amidst the turmoil. But that night, a message pinged again, this time from a number I didn’t recognize.
“We need to talk about the divorce. And what happens next.”
My blood ran cold. Who was this? And what did they mean by “what happens next”? I stared at the screen, the implications swirling in my head.
