Confrontation in the Courtyard
“You’re an unfit mother.” Marcus’s voice cut through the tension like a knife. His eyes were hard, filled with accusation. “Bringing Ivy to work? What kind of parent does that?”
Tessa’s heart thudded in her chest as panic surged again. What if he’s right? She opened her mouth, but the words wouldn’t come. “I—”
“You’ve made your choice,” Marcus spat, crossing his arms. “If you think this is parenting, you’re sorely mistaken.”
“Marcus, stop,” Graham’s deep voice broke in, firm and steady. He moved closer, a protective stance enveloping Tessa. “You don’t understand the situation.”
Tessa looked at Graham, searching for reassurance. “What are my rights?”
Graham ran a hand through his hair, frustration evident. “You have every right to care for your child, Tessa. You’ve been nothing but dedicated.”
“Dedicated?” Marcus mocked, a sneer twisting his lips. “Look where that’s gotten you! Ivy is here, in a restaurant, instead of a proper home.”
Graham stepped forward, his gaze locking with Marcus’s. “Let’s take this outside. We need to settle this like adults without dragging Ivy into it.”
With a tense nod, Tessa followed, heart pounding. She was acutely aware of the eyes watching from the dining room, the whispers that would soon fill the air. Outside, the courtyard was quiet, a stark contrast to the storm brewing in her mind.
Police on the Scene
The courtyard felt like a pressure cooker, heat rising as words flew between them. “You don’t get it, Marcus,” Tessa finally blurted, desperation spilling out in her voice. “Since Mrs. Alvarez got sick, I’ve been struggling to find someone to watch Ivy.”
“And that justifies bringing her to work? You’re grasping at straws,” Marcus shot back. He stepped closer, eyes piercing. “You’re lucky I’m here to take care of her.”
“I’m her mother,” Tessa shouted, her voice echoing off the courtyard walls. “This isn’t about you!”
Graham placed a calming hand on Tessa’s shoulder, grounding her. “You have the right to manage your own life and care for your daughter in whatever way you see fit.”
For a moment, they seemed to reach an understanding, a fragile peace settling among the tension. Just then, the sound of sirens cut through the air, and the ease shattered.
Tessa’s stomach dropped. “No, no, no,” she whispered, fear coursing through her veins. “Not now.”
“Who called the police?” Marcus demanded, a triumphant glint in his eyes. “What were you thinking?”
As the officers approached, Tessa instinctively grasped Ivy’s blanket, holding it tightly. Panic clawed at her throat. “I didn’t do anything wrong!” she exclaimed.
But before she could explain, Marcus stepped forward, his expression cold. “She can’t even keep her baby safe at work. I had no choice but to protect my daughter from this,” he said, his voice dripping with malice.
Tessa felt the ground shift beneath her. “What are you talking about?”
In a moment of betrayal, Marcus pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket. “I filed a restraining order against you for endangerment.”
Stunned and vulnerable, Tessa could only stare as the world around her spiraled into chaos.
