Escaping Silence: The Hidden Truth That Could Break Our Family's Cycle of Abuse
Back at the police station
“I need you to tell me exactly what happened,” the officer said, his pen poised over a notepad. I could barely hear him through the pounding in my ears.
Lily had been taken away for questioning first, and I could only guess at what they were asking her. My heart raced as I stared at the blank wall, feeling every bruise engraved in my skin. The officer’s skeptical gaze cut through my thoughts.
“It’s not easy, is it?” he said, almost dismissively. “You’ve been through a lot, but we need the truth.”
Taking a deep breath, I began recounting the past months of abuse, images of Grant's rage flashing in my mind. “He…he would get angry over the smallest things. It happened almost every day.” My voice trembled, each word pulling me deeper into memories I wanted to forget.
The officer nodded slowly, but his expression didn’t change. I could see the doubt swimming in his eyes. Did he think I was lying? That we were just clumsy kids seeking attention?
“We were scared to say anything,” I added, voice barely above a whisper, “but we’re not lying.”
“Let’s hope not,” he replied flatly, making notes that felt more like a verdict than an investigation.
Reuniting with our mother
Hours later, I was finally led to the waiting area where Lily sat, her face pale. I felt a surge of relief, but it was cut short when I saw our mother pacing, her eyes frantic.
“You two need to listen to me,” she said, rushing toward us. “The police are lying. Everything they’re saying is to destroy our family.”
“No, Mom,” I said, shaking my head. “You don’t understand. You haven’t been there. This is about us, about the truth.”
She waved her hands dismissively, her voice rising, “If you pursue this, it’ll tear us apart. You have to stick to the original story!”
I stared at her, disbelief flooding my veins. “You can’t be serious! You know what he did to us!”
She recoiled at my words, and for a moment, I thought I saw a flicker of guilt, but it vanished too quickly. “It doesn’t matter what he did. We need to keep the family together.”
As tension hung in the air, I glanced towards the hallway. My heart sank when I caught a glimpse of her whispering to Grant, who had just entered the station. They were huddled together, and I strained to hear.
“We need to control the story before it gets out of hand,” my mother said urgently.
Grant’s voice was lower, but I could still make out his words. “They have no idea what they’re up against. We’ll fix this.”
My breath caught in my throat. They were strategizing, plotting how to twist the narrative to protect themselves. My mother was choosing him over us again.
