Section 5: Chaos in the Hospital
The hospital erupted into chaos as the power flickered and then went out, leaving Nicole in near total darkness. Heart racing, she seized the opportunity to slip away from Paxton's room. She couldn’t waste a second; time was running out.
As she navigated the dimly lit corridors, the sounds of frantic nurses and distant shouts filled the air. “What’s happening?” someone yelled. Nicole ducked into the family meeting area, her breath catching as she fumbled for her phone to use as a flashlight.
She scanned the room, searching for anything that could expose her in-laws. Papers were strewn haphazardly across the table. “Come on, come on,” she whispered, flipping through documents. The tension made her fingers tremble.
Then her eyes landed on a letter, its bold text standing out against the dim light. She squinted, heart sinking as she read: “...failure to repay may result in severe consequences. This accident is the perfect opportunity to distance ourselves from liability.”
“What did you do, Lillian?” she gasped, realization washing over her.
Nicole’s blood ran cold. If this letter was real, then Paxton’s accident wasn’t an accident at all. She crumpled it in her hands, determined to expose the truth, but an urgent knock at the door jolted her back to reality. “Nicole?”
It was her father-in-law, Albert. Panic surged through her veins as she quickly pocketed the letter.
Section 6: Confrontation with the Truth
Nicole hurried back to Paxton’s room, clutching the letter like a lifeline. “Paxton, I found something,” she said, her voice shaking. He looked up at her, his eyes wide with confusion.
“It’s about your family. They...they’re involved in something terrible. I found a letter from your mother to a bank. They orchestrated your accident, Paxton!” The words tumbled out before she could stop them, desperate for him to understand.
“I knew it,” Paxton whispered, looking away. “I tried to tell you.”
“Tried to tell me? What do you mean?” Her heart raced. “What else, Paxton?”
His eyes flickered with a mix of fear and determination. “Right before the accident, I was going to expose them. They’re stealing from you. From me.”
“We can go to the police! We can—”
“No!” he interrupted, panic flooding his voice. “You don’t understand! They’ve had me on medication since the accident!”
“Medication? What are you talking about?”
He leaned closer, his voice barely a whisper. “Raymond prescribed something to keep me compliant. I thought it was to help with the pain, but it was—” His words faltered as he suddenly slumped forward.
“Paxton!” Nicole screamed, rushing to his side. She shook him lightly, but he didn’t respond. “No, no, no!”
As she held him tight, her heart shattered, understanding hit her like a punch. “They’re keeping you under control,” she gasped, dread coiling in her stomach. Desperation flooded her mind as Paxton lay unconscious in her arms, trapped in the family's dark web of lies.
