Uncovering Family Secrets
As the late afternoon sun cast a frail light through the hospital window, I sat at the small desk, combing through Paxton's financial records. My fingers trembled as I clicked through the files on his laptop, the weight of fear and urgency pressing heavily on me.
“What the hell?” I muttered, squinting at a line that didn’t add up. A series of withdrawals stood out—large sums of money, labeled vaguely. Was this the embezzlement I had suspected?
“Nicole, what are you doing?”
The voice jolted me back. It was Donald, stepping into the room, his brow furrowed with concern. “You shouldn’t be going through that. It’s not safe.”
“Not safe? You mean for who?” I shot back, heart racing. “These transactions are questionable. Someone is siphoning money from his business, and I need to know if it’s your brother or—”
“Stop!” Donald's voice was low, urgent. “You need to tread lightly. You have no idea what you’re getting into.”
“I can't stand by while they drain Paxton’s life away,” I replied, my resolve hardening.
“But if you dig too deep…” He trailed off, the unspoken truth hanging in the air like a suffocating mist. What was he afraid of? Who had the power to silence us?
Confrontation
After hours of contemplation, I decided it was time to confront my in-laws. I tucked the evidence away in my bag, a palpable tension thrumming beneath my skin. The hospital room felt suffocating as I approached Lillian and Albert. They were waiting, wreathed in feigned calm.
“Nicole, we were just worried about you,” Lillian said, her smile as sharp as a knife. “How’s Paxton?”
“I know what you’ve all been doing,” I stated, my voice steady despite the knot in my stomach. “I found evidence of embezzlement linked to Raymond and Holden.”
Lillian’s smile faltered, her eyes narrowing as Albert’s expression hardened like stone. “You shouldn’t make accusations without proof,” she replied smoothly, though the shifting in her posture betrayed her.
“I have proof,” I pressed, pulling out the documents, feeling like a lioness ready to pounce. “You can’t run from this. You’re all trying to protect something more sinister.”
“You’re overreacting, dear,” Lillian countered, her voice cold now, a mask of concern slipping to reveal the icy underbelly.
“Am I? Or are you afraid of what I might find out? What will become of Paxton if you continue this?” I felt the adrenaline rising as tension crackled like static electricity.
Before Lillian could respond, a soft whirring sound echoed through the room, and the fluorescent lights above flickered ominously. My heart dropped.
“What just happened?” Albert asked, alarm creeping into his voice.
In that instant, darkness enveloped the hospital, plunging us into chaos.
