Ingredients

6 to 8 medium-sized apples (preferably a mix of sweet and tart varieties like Honeycrisp and Granny Smith)

1 cup granulated sugar (adjust based on the sweetness of apples)

1 cup brown sugar, packed

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

½ teaspoon ground allspice

¼ teaspoon ground cloves

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon lemon juice

¼ cup apple cider (or water)

Optional: pinch of salt

Instructions

Prepare the Apples: Start by peeling, coring, and slicing the apples into small chunks (about 1-inch pieces). This allows for even cooking and smoother apple butter.

Mix the Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, vanilla extract, lemon juice, and apple cider. Mix well until the apples are thoroughly coated with the spices and sugars.

Transfer to Slow Cooker: Pour the apple mixture into your slow cooker. Spread it out evenly across the bottom. If you like a little extra sweetness, feel free to sprinkle a pinch of salt to balance the flavors.

Cook: Cover the slow cooker and set it on low heat. Let it cook for about 8 to 10 hours. The apples will break down and transform into a thick, spreadable consistency. Stir occasionally, especially towards the end of the cooking time, to prevent sticking.

Blend for Smoothness: Once the cooking time is up, you can leave the apple butter chunky or use an immersion blender to achieve a smoother texture. Blend until you reach your desired consistency.

Taste and Adjust: Give your apple butter a taste. If you prefer it sweeter, you can add more sugar. For a spicier kick, add a touch more cinnamon or nutmeg.

Jar It Up: Pour the apple butter into sterilized jars while it is still hot. Seal tightly and process in a boiling water bath for about 10 minutes if you plan to store it for longer. If you're using it right away, allow it to cool before sealing.

Enjoy: Spread your homemade apple butter on toast, pancakes, or use it in baked goods. It also makes a lovely gift during the fall season!
