Salsa, a word that means "sauce" in Spanish, has a rich history that dates back to the Aztecs and their ancient civilization. The earliest forms of salsa were made from simple ingredients like tomatoes, chili peppers, and ground seeds, creating a blend that was both flavorful and nutritious. As the Spanish colonized the Americas, they introduced new ingredients, such as onions and garlic, which have since become staples in various salsa recipes. The combination of native and introduced ingredients led to the creation of numerous salsa variations that reflect the diverse culinary traditions of Latin America.

Ingredients

4 ripe tomatoes, diced

1 small red onion, finely chopped

1-2 jalapeño peppers, seeded and minced (adjust for spice preference)

1 cup fresh cilantro, chopped

Juice of 2 limes

1 teaspoon garlic powder

Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

Prep the Ingredients: Start by washing and dicing the tomatoes. Finely chop the red onion and jalapeño peppers (be sure to wear gloves if you prefer to avoid the heat on your hands).

Combine the Base: In a large mixing bowl, add the diced tomatoes, red onion, and minced jalapeños.

Add Freshness: Gently fold in the chopped cilantro, making sure it is evenly distributed throughout the mixture.

Season It Up: Squeeze the juice of two fresh limes over the top of the salsa. Sprinkle in the garlic powder and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Mix and Chill: Stir everything together until well combined. For the best flavor, let the salsa sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes or in the refrigerator for at least an hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld.

Serve: Serve with tortilla chips, on tacos, or as a topping for grilled chicken or fish. Enjoy your Fresh Fiesta Salsa!
