Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

2 large eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/2 cup cocoa powder

1 cup chocolate chips (semi-sweet or dark)

1 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

Sea salt for sprinkling

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder until well combined. Set this mixture aside.

Cream Butter and Sugars: In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, cream the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract until fully incorporated.

Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix!

Fold in Chocolate Chips: Gently fold in the chocolate chips, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the dough.

Spread in Pan: Pour half of the cookie dough into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Press it down gently with a spatula for a smooth layer.

Add Caramel Layer: Drizzle half of the caramel sauce over the first layer of dough, spreading it out evenly but leaving a small border around the edges.

Top with Remaining Dough: Take the remaining cookie dough and scoop out spoonfuls, placing them on top of the caramel layer. Press down gently to cover as evenly as possible.

Add More Caramel and Sea Salt: Drizzle the remaining caramel sauce over the top layer of dough and sprinkle a generous amount of sea salt over the top for that perfect salted caramel flavor.

Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the edges are golden brown and the center is set. A toothpick inserted should come out mostly clean (a few crumbs are okay).

Cool and Serve: Allow the bars to cool in the pan for at least 15 minutes. Once cool enough to handle, lift them out using the parchment paper, if used, and cut into squares.

Enjoy: Serve warm or at room temperature, and enjoy the deliciousness of salted caramel and chocolate sugar cookie bars!
