Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably Italian style)

1/4 cup milk

1/4 cup finely chopped onion

1 clove garlic, minced

1 large egg

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Salt and pepper, to taste

2 tablespoons olive oil (for cooking)

1 cup beef broth

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 tablespoon cornstarch (to thicken)

1 tablespoon water (to mix with cornstarch)

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Mix until well combined, but do not overwork the meat to keep the steaks tender.

Shape the Steaks: Form the mixture into four oval patties, about 1 inch thick. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty to help them cook evenly.

Cook the Patties: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the patties to the skillet. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until they are nicely browned and cooked through. Remove the patties and set them aside on a plate.

Create the Gravy: In the same skillet, add the beef broth and soy sauce, scraping up any browned bits left from the patties. Bring it to a simmer.

Thicken the Gravy: In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with water until smooth, then slowly add this mixture to the simmering broth. Stir continuously until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency. Season with additional salt and pepper if needed.

Combine and Serve: Return the Salisbury steaks to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Let them simmer together for 2-3 minutes to absorb the flavors.

Garnish and Enjoy: Serve the Salisbury steaks hot, garnished with fresh parsley, alongside your choice of mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables.
