Ingredients

1 cup long-grain white rice (such as Jasmine or Basmati)

2 cups water (for cooking)

1 tablespoon unsalted butter or olive oil

1/2 teaspoon salt

Optional: 1 bay leaf or a few sprigs of herbs (like thyme or parsley) for extra flavor

Instructions

Rinse the Rice: Place the rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold running water until the water runs clear. This step removes excess starch and prevents sticky clumps. Allow the rice to drain for a few minutes.

Measure Water: In a medium saucepan, combine 2 cups of water with 1/2 teaspoon of salt. If you're using butter or olive oil, add it to the water as well. You can also add the bay leaf or herbs for added flavor.

Boil the Water: Bring the water to a rolling boil over medium-high heat.

Add the Rice: Once boiling, add the rinsed rice to the water and stir gently to disperse it.

Simmer the Rice: After adding the rice, cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid. Reduce the heat to low and allow the rice to simmer for about 15-18 minutes. Do not lift the lid during cooking, as this releases steam that is essential for fluffy rice.

Rest the Rice: Once the timer goes off, remove the saucepan from the heat but keep the lid on. Let the rice sit, covered, for another 5-10 minutes. This resting period allows the steam to continue cooking the rice gently.

Fluff and Serve: After the resting period, gently fluff the rice with a fork to separate the grains. Discard any bay leaf or herbs if used. Serve hot as a side dish or as a base for your favorite stir-fry or curry.
