Ingredients

For the French Toast:

1 loaf of brioche or challah bread, sliced thickly

4 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Pinch of salt

For the Topping:

1/4 cup brown sugar

Extra whipped cream (optional, for serving)

Fresh berries (optional, for serving)

Instructions

Prepare the Base:

    - In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt until well combined.

      Assemble the French Toast:

        - Layer the thick slices of brioche or challah bread in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread, making sure all pieces are well-coated. Press down gently on the bread to ensure it absorbs the mixture.

          Overnight Soak:

            - Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight (at least 6-8 hours) to allow the bread to soak up the custard mixture.

              Preheat the Oven:

                - The next morning, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

                  Bake:

                    - Remove the dish from the refrigerator and uncover it. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.

                      Prepare the Caramelized Topping:

                        - Once the French toast is baked, remove it from the oven and let it cool for about 5-10 minutes. Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the top.

                          - Using a kitchen torch, caramelize the brown sugar until it bubbles and forms a crispy crust. If you don’t have a torch, broil it in the oven for 1-2 minutes, watching closely to avoid burning.

                            Serve:

                              - Cut into squares or wedges to serve. Optionally, top with whipped cream and fresh berries for a delightful finishing touch.
