To understand Stromboli, one must first appreciate its Italian roots. Italian cuisine is known for its rich flavors, fresh ingredients, and regional specialties. Stromboli is thought to have been created in the 1950s in the Philadelphia area, where Italian immigrants sought to bring their culinary heritage to America. The name "Stromboli" is believed to have been inspired by the volcanic island of Stromboli off the coast of Sicily, known for its fiery eruptions—perhaps a metaphor for the punchy flavors packed inside this dish.

Ingredients

1 lb pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)

1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded

1 cup provolone cheese, shredded

1/2 cup Italian salami, sliced

1/2 cup pepperoni, sliced

1/2 cup ham, sliced

1/2 cup bell peppers, thinly sliced (optional)

1/2 cup black olives, sliced (optional)

1/2 tsp Italian seasoning

1 tsp garlic powder

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

1/4 cup marinara sauce (for dipping)

Flour (for dusting)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pizza dough into a large rectangle, about 12x16 inches, ensuring it has an even thickness.

Sprinkle the Italian seasoning and garlic powder evenly over the rolled-out dough.

Lay out the mozzarella and provolone cheeses uniformly over the dough, leaving about an inch border around the edges.

Evenly distribute the salami, pepperoni, ham, bell peppers, and olives over the cheese.

Starting from one long side, carefully roll the dough tightly into a log, ensuring the fillings stay inside. Pinch the ends and seam to seal the Stromboli.

Place the Stromboli seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the top with the beaten egg for a golden finish.

Use a sharp knife to make a few slashes on top of the Stromboli to allow steam to escape.

Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Once baked, remove from the oven and allow to cool for a few minutes before slicing.

Serve warm with marinara sauce for dipping.
