Ingredients

1 lb ground beef or turkey

1 small onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 red bell pepper, diced

1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

4 large garlic bread rolls or hoagie buns

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Filling: In a large skillet over medium heat, add ground beef or turkey and cook until browned. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Sauté Aromatics: Stir in the chopped onion, minced garlic, and diced red bell pepper. Sauté until the vegetables are soft and the onions are translucent, about 5 minutes.

Add Tomato Sauce: Pour in the tomato sauce and sprinkle in the oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine and bring to a gentle simmer. Cook for another 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld, stirring occasionally.

Toast Garlic Bread: While the meat mixture is simmering, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Cut the garlic bread rolls in half and place them on a baking sheet. Toast in the oven for about 5-7 minutes, until slightly crispy.

Assemble the Sloppy Joes: Once the filling is ready and the garlic bread is toasted, spoon the sloppy joe mixture generously onto the toasted rolls. Top each with a handful of shredded mozzarella cheese.

Melt the Cheese: Return the loaded garlic bread sloppy joes to the oven for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Serve: Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh basil leaves, and serve immediately. Enjoy your delicious twist on a classic meal!
